Is it compulsory to stay in the hostel at IIM Rohtak for all 5 years while doing IPM there? Also, do they have a rigid academic session where 90 attendance is compulsory?

YC
Yash Chandra Posted On : January 18th, 2023
Studies at Indian Institute of Management Rohtak (Expected 2024)

Yes, IPM and the majority of other programs are offered entirely in residence on all IIM campuses.

For the purpose of clarification, the attendance policy is actually 100% mandatory (at least on paper). You must now obtain permission to miss classes and leave campus. Medical emergencies, urgent family functions, and so on are examples of exceptions.

Other rules that affect the daily lives of students are:

  • Night curfews: First-year students are not permitted to leave their hostels after 10:30 p.m. Things become more relaxed as you advance in maturity level.
  • Lights out time: During the first month, this is usually strictly enforced until you get acclimatized. The light-out time was mostly kept on paper then.
  • Yoga: Yoga classes are required five days a week.
  • Restriction: You can leave campus without permission only on Sundays; otherwise, a gate pass is required. Again, as you become senior, this becomes less strict.
  • Discipline: Yes, there have been terminations based on disciplinary issues such as drinking, PDAs, and so on. As the other answer stated, you can't really escape.

Is it a good idea to do a PhD in humanities from a technical university like IITs and NITs?

GS
Gagan Sharma Posted On : June 28th, 2021
Ph.D Semantic Web & Computing, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli

The short answer is no, it's not a good idea if you can secure a seat in other universities which specialize in your domain. Here’s why:

  • IITs and the NITs are institutions for Engineering and Technology solely. Humanities in these institutions are mainly supporting departments.
  • Only due to the presence of guides, they do offer Ph.D. in humanities anyhow.

Considering your field, IIMs, TISS, and other apex institutions in Humanities or management studies make the best choices for you.

Go for Ph.D. in IITs or NITs only if you could not get admission into the top humanities and management institutes. Opting for research in an institute that doesn’t specialize in that domain is not a wise choice. However, you can consider top IITs like IITD, IITB, IITM, and other old ones as they carry a lot of exposure with them.

How is SVNIT surat?

AS
Amit Sharma Posted On : January 3rd, 2024
Studied at NIT Surat

Here are some details on SVNIT Surat-

  • Placement- For placements, the branch and overall performance of a particular batch hold the utmost importance. Last year, the highest package from B.Tech CSE was Rs. 44 LPA, while the average package was Rs. 15.22 LPA. The minimum package was Rs. 5.56 LPA. Out of 106 registered students, 94 were successfully placed from the batch.

You can also check the 2022 placements for M.Tech and other B.Tech branches at SVNIT.

  • Infrastructure- The campus is fully covered with high speed Wifi connection. All the departments are well-built, and the new ones have excellent lab facilities along with ACs. The central library has centralized AC, separate cabins for multiple purposes, a reading room, and a huge collection of books on various topics in addition to Engineering. The campus has a basketball court, a tennis court, a football ground, a cricket ground, a table tennis room, a huge badminton court and a really good gym facility.
  • Faculty and Curriculum-  SVNIT is known for its Civil, Mechanical and Electrical departments. The teachers are mostly Phds. Some of them are M.Techs, and in the process of completing their Phds. The teaching quality is below average to average, but there are some combinations of interesting subjects grouped with great teachers in all the branches. The Electronics department lacks behind in terms of both academics and infrastructure.
  • Extracurriculars- The institution organizes various events throughout the year. SPARSH is the annual techno-cultural fest. The freshers are a wonderful chance to get involved in college extracurriculars, either as a committee member or as a participant.

These are some of the parameters to assess the quality of teaching and overall infrastructure at SVNIT. At the end of the day, the quality of an institution is defined by the hard work of its students.

Does academic performance matter for getting into JBIMS? I have 72.80 in 10th and 74% in 12th if I get 99.99 percentile in CET. Will I get admission in JBIMS?

BP
Bhargavi Pradhan Posted On : March 3rd, 2023
National Chief Mentor @ IMS | JBIMS | CAT 99.92 | CET 99.99

Considering the past processes followed by JBIMS, it can be determined that either a direct written score-based admission or GDPI will be expected.

For the first possibility, calls will be issued based on the scores of the CAT and CET exams, and a group discussion and personal interview (GDPI) will be conducted. In this scenario, your academic record is of significant importance. The eligibility criteria for this process include a minimum of 65% in 10th grade and 60% in 12th grade. Thus, if your academic record is not up to par, there may be challenges, but if you perform well on other parameters, you should still have a chance of being successful.

In the second possibility, you can participate in the centralized admission process, where your academic record does not play a role. The admission will be solely based on the written score obtained in CET/All India tests. The eligibility criteria for this scenario align with the CET exam, which requires a minimum of 50% in graduation. So, you need not worry about your past academic performance and should focus on preparing well for the CET exam to secure a good score.

Is going to Calicut University by train or bus the easiest and comfortable from Thrissur?

SR
Saravana Ravi Posted On : October 19th, 2022
BSc Chemistry from University of Calicut (Graduated 1989)

Buses are more frequent than trains and you can get down right at the University Bus Stop. On a normal day with minimal traffic it takes around 3-4 hours.

Private Bus- not safe (Cost INR 90-95)

KSRTC buses- safe but not comfortable (Cost- INR 100)

AC Volvo buses- comfortable but expensive (Cost- INR 200)

Trains are delayed and less frequent than buses. You will have to get down at Parappanangadi, or at Calicut, and then take a bus to the University.

Express trains- INR 50

Superfast- INR 65

Passenger- INR 25

At 8.10 AM, there is the Ernakulam-Kannur Intercity Express that one can board. It reaches Parappanangadi between 10 and 10.30 AM. There’s also the Pune SF/ Lokamanya Tilak/ Nizamuddin SF at 6.20 AM from Thrissur. So you will have to get down at Tirur and Calicut. A third option is the Cannanore Passenger that starts from Thrissur at 5.55 AM. As it is too early, it’s suitable for people who are cutting down on expenses.

I am going to join the IIT Madras UG program. What should I bring there when I first join?

AS
Aditi Sengupta Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Studied at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

My sister was a UG student at IIT Madras and her senior friend advised her to pack the following:

  • You should pack light and cool clothes as the climate is usually hot and humid in Chennai.
  • Pack a raincoat as well because constant rains will not stop your classes and you will have to somehow go to your classes even when it rains.
  • Pack a few slippers, sandals, and shoes
  • Your laptop and charger
  • A smartphone
  • Electronics such as trimmers and power bank
  • An ATM card
  • License and other documents like passport, PAN card, Aadhar Card, etc.

Pack as minimal luggage as you can as you will be shopping from local shops for many basic amenities.

Should I choose electrical engineering at IIT Ropar or CSE at NIT Jalandhar?

SK
Saiphani Kumar Posted On : December 6th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IITRPR)

Rather than comparing the colleges, it’s better you identify your area of interest. Your own perspective gets to decide the college best suited for you. My friend is an IIT Ropar Electrical Engineering pass-out. She made the decision after considering the following aspects:

  • Overall Development: IIT Ropar is a student-run college. The students here are the fuel driving the college. Most of the activities from the orientation of new students to the mentorship of juniors during placements are handled by the students themselves. These opportunities help them identify their own true self and capabilities. They just don’t grow academically but also as a whole.

  • Interdisciplinary Learning: IIT Ropar promotes interdisciplinary learning. In fact, many EE students take up CS courses as electives and end up with CS jobs.

  • Brand Name: No matter how much one devalues this aspect it is indispensable. The IIT tag you will carry throughout your life will help you get admission to higher education and also jobs.

  • Crowd: The crowd at IIT is one of excellence. Everyone is ambitious and here to achieve great heights. These peer groups become a source of constant inspiration.

  • Alumni Association of IIT: This plays a significant role in developing and guiding placement drives at IIT Ropar. It offers mentorship to students and works with placement cells to ensure the best placements.

You can consider the same factors and compare the other two colleges. But I think IIT cannot be compared to just any college.

What are the different processes involved in filling out the challenging form in RGPV?

GG
Gopi Krishna Goyal Posted On : October 31st, 2022
B.E in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal

You can go to your college and request a challenge form, after which you must go to RGPV and submit them to the university office. You will need a copy of your current mark sheet as well as your principal's signature on the form.

It's worth noting that 1 in 1000 challengers has their marks changed. It's not that you did anything wrong, but the quality of teachers who check the copies is simply inadequate. Some students only get one mark in a subject, which is literally impossible. So go ahead and challenge, but don't give up if nothing changes, and try to write more in the re-exam.

BITS Pilani CSE or IIT Roorkee Electrical or IIT Kharagpur MnC or IIT Bombay Civil. What should I opt for?

A
Admin Posted On : July 3rd, 2024

I am a second year B.Tech Electrical Engineering student at IIT Roorkee. The NIRF 2024 ranking of IIT Roorkee and other colleges is given below:

  • IIT Bombay- 2
  • IIT Kharagpur- 3
  • IIT Roorkee- 6
  • BITS Pilani- Not Available (2023 Ranking- 25)

Though all the options mentioned by you are equally good, I am mentioning below the highlights of B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee-

  1. The Electrical Engineering department of IIT Roorkee offers excellent placements. Top core, finance, and consulting companies visit the department for recruitments.

During 2023, IIT Roorkee recorded the highest package of INR 1.3 CPA, and the highest international package of INR 1.06 CPA. Total 63 recruiters visited the campus with 500 job offers. Some of the top recruiters for the placement season were- BCG, Bajaj Auto, Flipkart, and Tata Steel.

During 2024, Flipkart offered a package of INR 34 LPA, and the position of Software Developer. This offer was open to B.Tech CSE, Electrical and ECE students.

Myntra offered a INR 30 LPA package for the role of Software Development Engineer, and this offer was open to students of B.Tech (CSE, ECE, EE) & MSM. These are just two examples.

  1. Apart from placements, IIT Roorkee offers top class research facilities to its students.
  2. With the rise of technologies like IoT, AI, and renewable energy, electrical engineers are in high demand in the current market.

The choice would ultimately depend upon your goals and interests, but I can assure you that B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee will provide you with great academics, research opportunities, and placements.
