Which is better in terms of placements and all: IIT Roorkee chemical or IIT BHU chemical? Which has more liberal branch change rules: IIT Roorkee or IIT BHU?

SD
Subham Dasgupta Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2016)

There are mixed reviews about the placements of the chemical department of IIT BHU and IIT

Roorkee. Students of IIT BHU thinks they have good placements than IIT-R and vice-versa. A

senior professor of Chemical Department T IIT Roorkee, who is an alumnus of IIT BHU, visited the campus of IIT BHU last year. According to him, students at both of the institutes believe that grass is greener on the other side. The fact is placements in both the departments are almost equal.

Following are some of the examples for the same:

  1. ITC, which offers 18L CTC, visited IIT-R and not IIT BHU, while HUL (Hindustan Unilever Limited), offering 22L CTC, visited IIT BHU, but not IIT Roorkee.

  2. Core companies for Chemical Engineering like Aditya Birla, Reliance visits both the campus.

Now coming to branch change, in IIT BHU, a maximum of 10 percent of students can move from one branch to another, while in IIT Roorkee, it’s only 2 percentage. So, in the case of branch change, IIT BHU is more liberal for change in the branch, i.e. if there are 120 students at IIT BHU chemical department, 12 students can move for branch change while in case of IIT-R in the strength of 120, approximately 3 students would be able to do the branch change.

Which is best for CS: IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT BHU?

RB
Rani Bakshi Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B.Tech Electrical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

Both IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT BHU are good institutes with good CS programs. Given below is a comparison of the various parameters of the two institutions:-

Closing Ranks: The closing ranks of IIT BHU (CSE) reach up to 509 while in the case of IIT Bhubaneswar it goes up till 2500.

NIRF Ranking: IIT BHU is ranked at  11st as compared to IIT Bhubaneswar at 17th in the NIRF rankings of all engineering institutions across the country.

Location: When it comes to being a better location Bhubaneswar trumps Varanasi because Varanasi doesn’t have the advantage of being the capital of its state which Bhubaneswar does as it is the capital of Odisha. An international airport and better connectivity to the entire metropolis of the country hold Bhubaneswar in a good place for attracting MNCs.

Campus Life: IIT BHU being the older and the more established IIT has a better campus life as compared to IIT Bhubaneswar. Despite the old infrastructure the fact that it is on the premises of one of the biggest central universities (BHU) helps its campus life.

Infrastructure: Despite being one of the more established IITs and having all the facilities, IIT BHU lags behind in infrastructure, the facilities being provided are outdated. IIT Bhubaneswar on the other hand, though half of its infrastructure is still under construction, has ample modern facilities and one of the best hostels among IITs.

Coding Culture: With more students interested in coding and being an older institute, IIT BHU has a better coding culture than IIT Bhubaneswar, although the coding culture at IIT BBS is also growing.

Placements: The placements at IIT BHU for CSE was higher than that of IIT Bhubaneswar, but the avg. placement of IIT Bhubaneswar’s first batch was comparable to that of BHU. In 2019, a total of 66 students got placed with an average placement package of 10 LPA to 58.21 LPA in IIT BHU. Whereas, there was 100% placement of the students from CSE in IIT Bhubaneswar in 2019. The average CTC offered was around 11.44 LPA.

Therefore, at the moment IIT BHU CSE is a better option, however, IIT Bhubaneswar is also an option worth considering.

Is IIT BHU good in research?

AS
Aditri Sen Posted On : February 16th, 2022
B.Tech. in Mining Engineering, IIT BHU

At IIT BHU, research culture isn’t that active. Research culture mostly depends on students and peer groups. Most students on campus are usually focused on placements. In a batch, you will find only a handful of people who are interested in research and are actively pursuing it.

However, if you have a particular interest and you want to do projects in that subject, you will get help and guidance from the professors.

How are classrooms of IIT BHU?

SB
Saunak Banerjee Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech ElectronicsIndian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

The classrooms at IIT BHU are good in terms of sitting capacity and ambiance. There are three Lecture Hall Complexes at IIT BHU and each of them has 9 classrooms. Each classroom has a sitting capacity of 150 – 200 students and each classroom is technically equipped with projectors, screens, and speakers. All the lectures for the first-year students take place in the lecture hall complexes. The only demerit is that these classrooms do not have air conditioners installed, but the good part is that the classrooms are well ventilated so in the summer season too the room temperature does not go too high.

The classrooms in the ABLT complex do have air conditioners installed and the infrastructure of the complex is also very nice. Mostly guest lectures are held in the ABLT complex.

Each department at IIT BHU also has its own classrooms in which classes of the second year and onwards takes place. These classrooms are also spacious and all of them are technically equipped with projectors and speakers and can accommodate a maximum of around 50 students.

How is the civil engineering department at IIT BHU?

PD
Pritam Das Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech Civil Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2018)

Civil engineering is one of the oldest branches at IIT BHU and largest in the country. Recently the architecture department also was inaugurated at IIT BHU which is headed by one of the professors of the Civil Engineering Department. This department has well-funded labs which are equipped with modern instruments. Professors of this department are well qualified and most of them are from IITs. The structural engineering department is quite a robust one and some of the professors have worked on projects as big as the Hirakud dam construction.

The department has developed close links with international and national organizations which helps during placement times. Placement statistics are also promising, here at IIT BHU and some of the offers are comparable to the other branches such as CSE and ECE. This department has taken up various research programs by CSIR, UGC, SAP, HUDCO, and many more. They also cooperated with industries to work on projects given by Govt., Semi-Govt., and private organization. This branch would provide you with enough opportunities involving real-time problems in the city and around the campus. Also due to increasing urbanization, civil engineering has a high scope. It is a perfect branch if you wish to have a government job and aspire for IAS, IES, and UPSC. On top of that civil engineering could be regarded as one of the easiest amongst core branches.

Overall, the civil engineering department at IIT BHU is worth joining and has a quite appreciable image as opposed to the perception of this branch elsewhere.
