How did you manage your UPSC preparation while doing an M.Tech from IIT Delhi?

SG

studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

The key to manage your UPSC preparation while doing an MTech from IIT Delhi is to score well in your optional subjects rather than General Subjects. A successful candidate scores 275+ in optional whereas an unsuccessful candidate scores around 240. The General Subjects' scores are usually the same.

So prepare well for optional in MTech because you can prepare for GS in just a year. Focus more on optional as it’s a major criterion for selection.

What should I do: get an M. Tech. degree at an NIT or IIEST Shibpur or get a job in TCS?

AA

BTech CSE, NIT Surathkal (2018)

If you believe in yourself and think that you can do well in M.Tech, then you should consider going for NIT rather than joining any company. This is because cracking the CS GATE exam is not easy and there is no guarantee that you will be able to get admission to any IIT next year. Don't waste your one year and go for M.Tech instead.

Here are some reasons why you should consider going for M.Tech at NIT:

  • Opportunities: Top NITs provide a lot of opportunities for students pursuing an M.Tech in Computer Science. There are various research projects, internships, and other opportunities that can help you grow and enhance your skills.
  • Placements: Top companies visit NITs for campus placements, and if you work hard and perform well in your M.Tech program, you can easily get good placement offers.
  • Exposure: Pursuing M.Tech at NIT will expose you to a diverse and dynamic environment, where you will get to interact with students from different backgrounds and cultures. This can help broaden your perspective and give you a holistic view of the industry.
  • Faculty: NITs have highly experienced and knowledgeable faculty who are experts in their respective fields. They can guide you and help you develop a strong foundation in computer science concepts and applications.
  • Networking: Pursuing M.Tech at NIT can also help you build a strong network of professionals and experts in the industry. This can be useful in the future when you are looking for job opportunities or collaborations.

Pursuing M.Tech at NIT can provide you with ample opportunities, good placements, exposure, guidance from experienced faculty, and a strong network.

Which one should I choose: MS by Research program or M Tech at IIIT Hyderabad?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : August 2nd, 2023

If your future goal is getting a high paying job, choose the M.Tech program at IIIT Hyderabad. The course fee is high but an average package of around INR 31 LPA is offered to M.Tech students. Thus, you will be able to easily cover your education expenses within a year of your job.

If you are really interested in Research, you should choose the MS by Research program. The average time for completing the MS program is 3 years, but depending upon your guide, you can also complete the program earlier than that. At present, the duration has even come down to 2.5 years.

MS students sit with M.Tech students during IIIT Hyderabad placements and get equal placement opportunities. However, as an MS student you will get so involved in research work that instead of going for a job you will probably end up doing Ph.D. If you are interested in CV/ML, its course structure and guidance at IIIT Hyderabad are top notch. The MS course is very flexible and you study subjects that are relevant for your research.

Overall, whether you go for MS by Research or M.Tech at IIIT Hyderabad is a matter of your personal goals.

After completing a B.Tech from NIT Trichy, is it advisable to pursue an M.Tech in IITs or IISc?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : July 19th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

No, it's certainly not a wise decision to pursue an MTech after completing BTech from NIT Trichy. The courses and the approach are similar, giving you no newer perspectives and wasting 2 years as well as the money spent. A better alternative is to go for an MS or Ph.D. abroad instead. That will be the true utilization of your money, knowledge, and time.

However, if you are hesitant about going abroad, an MBA from an Indian B school is also a great option.

An MTech in IIT should only be considered if you have a low CGPA and have no project achievement up your sleeve. The MTech course will give you a second chance to improve your grades and work well on projects improving your profile as a whole. This will help you open better Ph.D. options. But if you are not planning to do one, then MTech is again of no use.

How is the M.Tech placement in SVNIT?

RK
Ravindra Kumar Posted On : January 3rd, 2024
Studied at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (2019)

SVNIT witnesses decent M.Tech placements. But for someone who wishes to work as a teacher, there are good options. This is because a large number of colleges and coaching institutes visit the campus for recruitment. The companies look for a certain specialization, in accordance with the job requirements.

Intel and Marvell Semiconductor visit the campus seeking VLSI, Communication systems and Computer Science students. They do not make direct recruitments. Instead, they hire students as interns and then later offer them PPOs.

Bombardier, Qualcomm and General Electric hire from M.Tech Electrical. L & T hires Civil and Mechanical students, and WSP hires Civil students. Akash institute, Base and WiFi visit for teaching recruitments.

M.Tech placements are average at even the IITs. I would recommend you look for off-campus placements as well.

Is there is equal value in doing an MTECH from IIT Bombay in comparison to doing a BTECH from IIT Bombay?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 18th, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

As an IITB undergraduate, you may observe that some UGs do not respect M.Techs from IIT Bombay. However, this is not a fair judgment as M.Techs work hard on their projects, have great practical knowledge of their stream, and know their stuff. While clearing JEE is a parameter to gauge one's intelligence, it does not solely determine one's worth or capability.

Interestingly, the placement survey of the past 2 years reveals that M.Techs give tough competition to UGs during placements and get placed in core jobs with good packages. In fact, in some cases, fewer UGs get placed in core jobs and instead opt for non-core sectors or start-ups. Companies like BMW and Mahindra have taken in a good number of M.Techs from the mechanical stream.

Therefore, it is crucial to recognize your capabilities and potential, and not judge or compare yourself based on the degree you possess. B.Techs and M.Techs have different parameters of evaluation, and both seem to have done well for themselves in their respective fields. Remember to focus on your skills and knowledge, work hard, and opportunities will follow
