Which one will be a better choice for an MSc in maths, IISc, ISI Kolkata, or IIT KGP?

AR

While all three institutes are prestigious institutes, my sister chose ISI Kolkata for a number of reasons. Here are a few reasons

  • ISI Kolkata is the best institute when it comes to Maths and it is ranked #1401+ in QS World University Rankings 2024. Its flagship course is B.Stat.
  • In this modern era, Statistics is highly demanded and ISI opens opportunities in the same.
  • The placement scenario of ISI Kolkata is at par with the top IITS. The average package recorded is INR 25.50 LPA while the highest stood at INR 89 LPA.
  • The institute offers a full scholarship and currently, a number of ISI pass-outs are undergoing PhD programs in top foreign universities.
  • ISI has no tuition fees except hostel fees. In fact, students get an annual scholarship of Rs. 36,000/-.
  • The small batch size improved the student-teacher ratio as a result all students got individual attention.
  • The accommodation facilities are great and students are allotted single occupancy rooms.

ISI Kolkata is a great option as it offers opportunities in both, jobs and higher education.

How should I prepare for IIT Gandhinagar MSc Cognitive Science written test? How many sections are asked in the test?

SM
Subhashree Mukherjee Posted On : March 17th, 2021
Ph.D. at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (2018)

My brother appeared in the written test for MSc Cognitive Sciences in February 2020. So, I can give you some insight about the same.

The written test analyses your comprehensive skills i.e. the ability to implement the things you read. The section will contain comprehension questions. It will also include some of the paragraphs or questions based on the Cognitive Science Journals.

Examination Pattern:

The written test is the same for everyone.

  • It contains 4 questions of comprehensive type and 1 of data interpretation.
  • The total marks for the examination are 25 and the duration is 1 hour.

Preparation Tips:

  • For preparation, you can simply take some random comprehensive type question off the internet and solve it.
  • In his examination, my brother had passages from pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders, case-studies on behavioral experiments using VR/AR, etc.
  • The questions are designed in a way that everyone can interpret them.

Be patient and stay motivated. All the best for your exam.

Should I take MSc Maths at BITS Pilani?

SD
Shruti Dasgupta Posted On : July 3rd, 2023
Student at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

Let me clear the general misconception that the level of MSc Maths at BITS Pilani is similar to the 10+2 level. Class 12th Maths is highly analytical while MSc Maths is full of definitions, theories, and proofs. The pedagogy adopted is poor and the majority of students study this subject despite a lack of interest.

For someone who has no interest in Analytical stuff, courses such as ERA, Topology, and Functional Analysis can be very challenging. Some courses which will intrigue you will be of no use because BITS follows the relative grading system where you are graded according to how well you perform as compared to others.

Overall, if you like complex theories and expressions then go for it, but if you too have no interest in complex theories it’s better to not take it.

While many claims that Maths+CS is the best combo, let me tell you that you can take 3–4 Maths courses that help in CS as electives in your CS degree. MSc in Maths is a suitable option only if you are willing to pursue a career in Mathematical research, else the best dual degree option is MSc in Economics. The curriculum is light and knowledgeable.

Which is better M.Sc. Statistics from Mumbai University or NMIMS?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : July 3rd, 2023

NMIMS is a better option than Mumbai University for MSc Statistics because of these simple reasons

  • NMIMS has much better infrastructure than Mumbai University and offers better facilities and campus life.
  • Better recruiters visit NMIMS and the placement scenario is much better than Mumbai University.
  • The processors at NMIMS are very approachable and helpful in contrast to MU The teaching staff is better than Mumbai University and they are quite cooperative with students as compared to MU professors that despite being learned refuse to help students.
  • NMIMS ensures proper attendance to classes while Mumbai Univeristy has a pathetic attendance scenario.

The simple points above are enough to prove that NMIMS is better than Mumbai University for MSc Statistics.

What's the reputation of the South Asian University in Delhi for an MSc in applied mathematics?

SK
Suhani Kashyap Posted On : June 23rd, 2021
Studied at Delhi University (2018)

South Asian University is a central funded government university. According to my friend studying there, It is not only an exceptional university in India but only one among the records of international universities in the world.

  • This international university was established by a member of the SAARC.
  • It was a dream project of Dr. Man Mohan Singh which he had proposed in the 13th SAARC summit held in Dhaka.
  • It was later in the 14th summit that the establishment of this university was decided to be held in India.
  • It provides courses of Applied Math, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Development Economics, International relations, Sociology, and Legal Studies.
  • Its permanent campus is under construction in Maidan Garhi, Delhi while being operated from Akbar Bhawan, Chanakyapuri.
  • SAARC consists of 8 countries which are India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
  • Therefore, the degree given by the university is recognized by the UGC of all 8 countries.
  • The tag of SAARC attached would benefit your career in foreign countries as well.

SAU has its own limitations as it is a new university. SAU is yet to be known among the scholarly and creating its name. Due to its less popularity, the entrance competition is not very tough. However, students prefer IITs, DU, and JNU for their post-graduate studies ignoring the high-level facilities provided at SAU.

Which is better for M.S. in Quantitative Economics; ISI Kolkata or ISI Delhi?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 18th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Both ISI Kolkata and ISI Delhi are excellent institutes offering the MS in Quantitative Economics program. It’s difficult to compare the two as they have similar admission criteria, placement, and even scholarship opportunities.

However, if I had been in your place, I would have chosen ISI Kolkata as it has more courses, professors, and students. The students get to interact with students in non-MSQE courses.

How is Delhi university for an MSc in physics?

SS
Savi Sharma Posted On : July 5th, 2023

The Department of Physics and Astrophysics, Delhi University is one of the oldest and highly regarded departments of the institute. The faculty pool is actively involved in their own research work and encourages the students to do the same. researchers in their respective fields. This department has a plethora of experimental and theoretical studies.

Like every coin has two sides, this department has its own sets of weaknesses too. One of the main drawbacks is the high intake around 300. Thus high intake makes it difficult to get equal attention from teachers related to research, Ph.D. guidance, and seminars. It is also very challenging to organize any scientific or non-scientific programs because the batch size is very large and not every student can be convinced. The exams of this department are challenging and the limited resources make things more so.

If you are a sincere student who is ready to commit yourself to hard work and persistence you will excel here without any doubt.

How is the MSc Applied Statistics and Informatics course in IIT Bombay?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 17th, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

MSc Applied Statistics and Infometrics at IIT Bombay can be challenging for some students who did their B.Sc from Mumbai University, especially if they did not receive sufficient training in statistics. In comparison to Delhi University and Calcutta University, the Mumbai University curriculum is relatively deficient in statistical topics. Consequently, most of the students in the class come from DU and CU. While DU and CU students are often comfortable during the first quarter or half of the semester since they studied similar topics in their bachelor's programs, Mumbai University students may struggle to keep up.

Despite the challenges, this course is in line with current analytics trends in the market. The course requires students to complete not only statistics courses but also intermediate-level computer science courses such as C, C++, Data Structures, and Applied Algorithms. Students also receive some exposure to statistical software, depending on which software the professor prefers: SaS or R.

Usually, the students at BITS opt for a dual degree program along with a Master’s in Economics, which will give them more opportunities. The bank companies are looking forward to the students from the economics branch who possess skills, and they mostly visit BITS Pilani. The offer package ranges from 11-14 lakhs per annum. Other than this, the analytics companies also give placement to students in economics with a package of 8-9 lakhs per annum.
