Which college is better, IET Lucknow or Thapar University, in the sense of placements and also campus life?

TS

Both IET Lucknow and Thapar University are renowned colleges. Just as in every college they both have their strengths and weaknesses. As I got to know some people from these colleges while researching, I might be able to help you with your question.

  • The placement opportunities provided to students at Thapar are good, whereas at IET it is moderate. Visiting companies at Thapar for recruitment are extremely esteemed and reputed.
  • Both of these universities are known for their highly experienced and competitive faculty.
  • The campus life is more or less similar in both colleges.
  • The seniors make the campus life livelier and more energetic with their enthusiasm and passion.
  • If you want to prepare for GATE or CAT exams, IET will be a good choice.
  • Thapar’s infrastructure and facilities are much better than IET.
  • Placements of Civil and Mechanical branches are not good at IET. But CS and IT departments have comparatively better placements.
Categories IET Lucknow Thapar University
Course Fee 3.44 lakh 13.23 lakh
Highest CTC 16 LPA 25-26 LPA
Average CTC 6-7 LPA 12 LPA
Recruiting Companies ZS Associates, TCS, Cognizant, HCL, etc. Microsoft, Apple, Wipro, Infosys, etc.

You might lose interest while studying at IET as it is not as lavish as other private colleges or even like Thapar. But if you work hard enough you can reach greater heights, no matter which college you graduate from.

Yes, it’s possible to get admission at Thapar University, based only on board marks. For 50% of the seats, admission is through JEE Main. While for the other 50%, admission is done based on the 10+2 score.

In order to get admission based on merit, you need to score above 70% in 10+2. You also should have appeared in JEE Main, in order to be considered.

I can only guide you but only you know what is right for you. If you are serious about a career in CS, Thapar University will offer better opportunities and an environment. But if you want to explore other things and also want to enjoy your college life, then taking a dual degree at BITS Pilani will be a great choice for you. BITS has a very flexible curriculum so it allows you to explore your ambitions thoroughly and openly. Moreover, you will be exposed to a better crowd and culture so obviously the learning experience will be more enriched. Generally, both institutes have their pros and cons, and going through these will guide you better toward making a well-informed decision.

Thapar University Pros:

  1. You will be able to study CS, which has amazing job opportunities.
  2. You will complete your graduation in 4 years
  3. Excellent accommodation facilities at par with BITS

Thapar University Cons:

  1. 75% attendance rule
  2. The crowd and academic ambiance are not at par with BITS because of the reservation policy.

BITS Pilani Pros:

  1. No compulsory attendance rule
  2. The packages offered are great but you will have to work hard for them
  3. More talented and skilled peer groups because of no reservation
  4. Dynamic campus life

BITS Pilani Cons:

  1. You will be completing your graduation in 5 years, a year later than your BTech counterparts
  2. You will have to study extraordinarily hard in the first year to get the branch of your choice.
  3. Intense competition and academic pressure.

Lastly, don't take dual degrees in BITS on the pretext of getting  CS. Only a handful of students get to choose CS in dual degrees.

How is Hostel K in Thapar University?

DB
Danish Bose Posted On : August 7th, 2023
Studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

This is what Hostel K in Thapar University looks like

Thapar university

The Hostel K in Thapar University is assigned to 2nd-year students. The hostel has provisions for both AC and non-AC rooms. The rooms are well-furnished and spacious.

Here are a few important points regarding the living conditions of the students here

  • The major drawback of this hostel is its mess that serves poor quality food. The mess is run by untrained staff that serves food that tastes pretty bad.
  • The level of hygiene is another problem here. The large number of washrooms makes it difficult to maintain cleanliness and only a few are properly functional.
  • Safety is also not taken care of and most of the corridors have no CCTV cameras. Only the entrance of the hostel has CCTVs.

Overall, Hostel K has poor living conditions and authorities need to take care of the mess facilities here especially.

studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2020)

Here are a few simple pieces of advice my brother in his second year at Thapar University would like to give to first-year CSE students

  • Choose your company wisely as they will be your motivators and friends for 4 years
  • It's not necessary to hit the gym daily.
  • Prepare ED 1, ED 2, CP 1, CP 2, and  Maths 1 subjects well as they are extremely scoring and will help you upscale your grades.
  • Don’t get detained in Mechanics or Electricafor l.
  • In the first year, you can easily score an 8.5+ GPA by studying a week prior to your exams. So focus on exploring everything.
  • Score the highest in sessionals so that your burden in EndSem is less.
  • Don't be demotivated if you lack coding skills, rather work on them relentlessly.
  • You can sit for most companies if you score a GPA of 8.5+

Lastly, enjoy your college life, it never comes back!

How good is Thapar University for mechanical engineering? I have heard that its teacher and placement scenario is bad.

TS
Tania Sharma Posted On : August 7th, 2023
Studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

To be honest, the general scenario of Mechanical Engineering at most Indian colleges is pathetic, and rarely do core companies come for placements. Surprisingly enough, Thapar is among the few companies that are visited by core mechanical companies. So yes, Thapar University’s Mechanical Engineering is second only to IITs, NITs, and BITS. Here are a few highlights of the course

  • During the 4th semester, students are given 3 projects of Creo which have no written exam. The project alone takes months to complete and students learn the whole solid modeling during the process.
  • Earlier, Mechatronics was an optional subject but now it has been made compulsory in the 2nd year. The reason is its increasing scope in the future and its compulsion in papers like ESEs.
  • Frequent workshops are held solely to impart knowledge and no grading is done for these.
  • The Mechanical Department has some of the best faculty with highly experienced professors. Some even are Ph.D. holders from old IITs.
  • The peer group is excellent because usually the ones passionate about Mechanical join this program.
  • The placement scenario is decent and companies like Eicher, Honda, Maruti, Hero, Royal Enfield, etc. visit for campus placement.
  • The entire 6th semester is for internships so students gain a lot of practical experience and prepare better for placements.

So Thapar University’s Mechanical Department is an excellent option if you are passionate about the field and are unable to make it into ITs, NITs, or BITS, then go for Thapar.
