Second issue, the argument presumes, albeit falsely, that if the original movie was popular and books based on that movie are bestsellers. The trope and the characters of that movie already enjoy immense popularity due to the original movie being a success and its books being bestsellers. Finally, it’s important to note the reasons for which the original movie was popular. The reasons for which the books are bestsellers can be wildly different . It’s not always possible that these reasons can be clubbed together to attract an audience for the sequel movie. For Example, the original star wars movies were wildly popular among common masses, its novels became best sellers but not every star wars fan has read them. This means their popularity is lesser when compared to original movies. So, in such a situation, a movie based on the plot of best seller books while utilizing the movie appeal of the characters will not impress as many people. This is because a considerable majority of Star Wars fans haven’t taken the pains to read the book. This might follow a different theory/plotline as opposed to what was being conveyed in the original movies. This will confuse the audience even more. In this line of thought, the role of fanfictions needs to be recognized. If there are books based on popular movie characters they are highly likely to be fanfiction. . These are considered a light and fun read, nobody really wants to see movies based on them because you can read twenty different fanfictions with separate results.

In conclusion, it is seen that movies with pre-established popularity through popular original movies. A best seller line of books on them are likely to do well. There are several factors that will contribute to the fall of that movie like the generation gap, cultural tropes of original movies or best seller books etc. A lot more people go to movies than those who read books and the outrage that a movie can spark garners mainstream media attention. This can cause a movie to easily lose profit. For Example, Fifty Shades of Grey as a book was a bestseller while the movie flopped even though both of them dealt with the same theme. The outrage about the book was subdued while in the case of the movie it translated into losses. Similarly, there are several popular movies of the past which won’t be well received today because they were openly homophobic, racist, sexist etc.
