Train Delays Have Always Been A Problem For People Of Developed GMAT Reading Comprehension

Reading Passage Question

Train delays have always been a problem for people of developed as well as developing countries. Even after all the progress we have made, we have not been able to solve this problem. According to Plamen Angelov, a researcher from the University of Lancaster, train delays are caused not by the operators but by the passengers. For instance, in order to board a train, passengers block its door, restricting the deboarding passengers and delaying the departure of the train. Some of them hold the doors open or stay too close to the door while some cross the safety lines on the platform, delaying the trains every time. A delay of a few minutes may not appear to be significant until these minutes add up over the course of a journey. Dr Angelov plans to solve this problem with the help of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system. He and his team plan to use images from the CCTV cameras already present in the train carriages to calculate how busy a particular exit will get as passengers prepare to disembark. At the same time, the cameras present on the platform will observe the number of people waiting to board the train. Both the data points will then be fed to the AI system that can analyze the data to find out the likely areas of congestion, and accordingly, can route the passengers so that the overall congestion can be reduced to a significant extent. If this system turns out to be successful, AI will win the credit for solving one of the oldest problems faced by the modern society.

Solutions and Explanation

  1. What is the main point of the passage?
  1. To discuss all the problems being faced by developed and developing countries.
  2. To evaluate the plan suggested by Dr Angelov.
  3. To describe why the problem of delayed trains could not be solved.
  4. To discuss the behavior of passengers waiting for a train.
  5. Describe a long-standing problem and explain a plan that using technology can address that problem.

Answer: E
Explanation:
It's crucial to comprehend the passage as a whole and identify the main theme and idea before answering questions of this nature. The passage's main idea is to describe a persistent issue and to outline a strategy for resolving it by utilizing technology. The final option corresponds with this and is therefore the right answer.

  1. As per Dr Angelov, which of the following is the main reason behind train delays?
  1. Train Operators
  2. Government
  3. Platform guards
  4. Passenger behavior
  5. Management

Answer: D
Explanation:
The passage clearly states that train delays are brought on by passengers and their actions rather than by the operators. This was the opinion of researcher Plamen Angelov from the University of Lancaster. The fourth option can be inferred with this, so it is the right choice. The remaining options are all wrong choices as they are not the correct reasons.

  1. Which of the following is not true as per the passage?
  1. Using AI, the behavior of people on the platform can be monitored.
  2. Controlling the behavior of passengers can help the trains run on time.
  3. The AI system being planned is very cost-effective.
  4. We have not yet been able to solve the problem of train delays.
  5. The AI system will suggest the less busy door to the passengers based on the number of people standing at the door and on the platform.

Answer: C
Explanation:
The third option is the right and the appropriate answer. This is because the expense of the planned Artificial Intelligence system is not covered in the passage. The rest of the options are all wrong answers. The statements in the remaining options can be clearly interpreted from the passage.
