Topic:
Due to the decline in demand for mining technology, all the related corporations are suffering from decline of profit and sales this year, including Blastcom Corporation. Blastcom Corporation is considering adopting one growth strategy: to shift some of the researchers from mining technology to renewable energy technology, the demand for the renewable energy such as solar energy. Some of the prominent companies which market renewable energy have been successful in recent years. Therefore, it is guaranteed that company Blastcom will also be successful in the future by providing renewable energy.
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Sample Essay:
According to the given argument, the planning department of an investment firm has decided to invest in a company named Solario. This company deals with the manufacture of equipment that produce electricity from the Sun – solar energy. This recommendation by the planning department of the investment firm was made based on an observation. The prices of several types of products used to transform solar energy into electricity has seen a drastic drop in the recent past. This declining trend in the solar-powered products has made this conventional or renewable form of energy to be quite reasonable. This is more attractive as compared to the energy generated from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil.
Another major reason why the firm has concluded to encourage their investment in Solario is that the chief executive of this company was formerly a member of the planning group of another software engineering firm named Ready-to-Ware. Since its inception, this firm has witnessed tremendous levels of growth.
All the above arguments given in order to justify the decision of the planning department to invest in Solario are somewhat reasonable. However, in my opinion, all these arguments have some flaws which deserve attention.
Firstly, the argument assumes that an investment in Solario will prove to be a prudent step. The reason is that it is much more cost-efficient than energy generated from non-conventional sources such as coal and oil. Thus, consumers would naturally prefer solar-powered equipment to thermal energy generated from coal and oil. On the surface, this assumption seems to be valid. However, a deeper analysis of this argument reveals some inherent faults. Besides cost, there are also other factors that need to be pondered upon before any investment in solar-powered equipment is to be made. For example, despite a significant development in solar-powered technologies, this form of energy is not commercially viable.
At present, solar-powered energy can only cater to the needs of small operatives and individual households and consumers. With the available technology, it can, in no way, provide electrical power to the industries. In such a scenario, it is completely wrong to even assume the possibility of solar-powered energy to replace technologies developed to generate thermal power – using coal and oil – anytime in the near future. Besides this, the Government must also take steps to properly market all solar-powered equipment and spread awareness regarding their utilization as an alternative to the technologies using coal and oil.
Secondly, the argument also assumes that an investment in Solario would prove to be beneficial due to the former experience of Solario’s chief executive. This company, since its inception, has witnessed significant growth. Hence, this argument falsely assumes that this fact is enough to make Solario successful. However, it must be noted that both Solario and Ready-to-Wear belong to very different sectors. The former is based on the manufacture of solar-powered products whereas the latter was simply a software engineering firm. Every sector has different demands. Hence, having a successful experience in one sector does not make a person a natural champion in another sector.
In conclusion, it can be said that the argument is only convincing at the surface level. However, a deeper analysis of the same can reveal multiple flaws and several questions that remain unanswered. In order to strengthen the argument, it is necessary that provides further details regarding the type of solar-powered equipment that is being manufactured by Solario. This would help to determine the products can be utilized for both commercial and individual consumption purposes. It would also help in the assessment of consumer preference of solar-powered products to technologies using thermal power. Additionally, the argument must also try to provide more details regarding the career, education and industry experience of the Chief executive of Solario in order to assess his capability to drive the business of Solario in a successful manner.
