Salaries of Moon and Shanto are in the Ratio of 4:5 GMAT Problem Solving

Question: Salaries of Moon and Shanto are in the ratio of 4:5. If the salary of each is increased by $5000, the new ratio becomes 50:60. What is Shanto's present salary?

A) 20,000
B) 25,000
C) 30,000
D) 35,000
E) 40,000

Correct Answer: B
Solution and Explanation:
Approach Solution 1:

Given

x/y= 4/5
x=4y/5
and
x+5000/y+5000 = 5/6
solve for y = 25000

Approach Solution 2:
Let the salaries of Moon & Shanto be m & s respectively
--> m : s = 4 : 5
--> m = 4k & s = 5k for some positive number k

If the salary of each is increased by $5000, the new ratio becomes 50:60
--> (4k+5000)/(5k+5000)= 50/60= 5/6
(4k+5000)(5k+5000)=5060=56
--> 6(4k + 5000) = 5(5k + 5000)
--> 24k + 30,000 = 25k + 25,000
--> k = $5,000

Shanto's present salary = 5k = 5*5,000 = $25,000

Approach Solution 3:
The following equation can be created
(4x + 5000)/(5x + 5000) = 50/60
(4x + 5000)/(5x + 5000) = 5/6
6(4x + 5000) = 5(5x + 5000)
24x + 30000 = 25x + 25000
5,000 = x

Shanto’s present salary is 5,000 x 5 = 25,000.
