It is evident that the profits of local clothing stores have decreased over the period of three months namely August, September, and October. It is also seen that the profit of the home products department has increased in the same period. The home product department is a broad category, under which comes every sort of thing that is needed in a house. The home products include utensils, decorates used to decorate a house, things that are of daily use, etc. Therefore it is often seen that the departmental manager thinks of shifting its production from clothing to home products.

It is based upon some reports directed towards an increment of profit for the stores that sell home products. It is also indicated that there is a decrease in the profit for the stores that are particularly on the clothing store. Due to this report, the business manager comes to the conclusion that the customers are bent on buying home products rather than clothing. This is during these few months of the year, that is August, September, and October. Moreover, there is a huge requirement for capital in this shifting business line. And the report of the increased profit in the home product is based on a survey of a small sample size. The sale of the home product also depends on region, cost of the products, the durability, quality of the home product, stock of home production, etc. There are some serious problems with this decision, from two critical prospects.

Firstly, the business manager’s decision to increase the size of the home product, and to decrease the size of clothing is based on the report of sales. This report is further based on a survey, which is done on a very small sample size. The sales report for these three months is not properly representative of the whole year’s sales report. It is very risky for the business manager to come to such a conclusion. It can happen that the profit margin of the clothing store is high enough then the profit of the home product store for the rest of the nine months of the year. This is not shown in the survey for that three months only. So, before jumping to the decision of increasing the home product store, the business manager must look into the survey report for the whole year. This sudden and weak- based shift in business plan would further increase their cost, resulting in lesser profits.

Secondly, the sales trend may vary on a different basis. It may happen that the sale of clothing may be good in North Kolkata during the specified three months which are August, September, and October. Also it may not be good during the same period in another part of it. Or, it may vary on the basis of the quality of products sold by the stores. It may happen that the stores in which the survey has been done may sell poor cloth quality during the phase of the survey. Or it may also happen that the shops where the survey took place did not have woolen clothes, and that particular region was having winter then. So there are various possibilities that can prove the survey report is not a solid base. This can help business manager decide to shift from clothing to home products.

Therefore, the decision of shifting the production line from clothing to home products, on the basis of a survey report for three months is not persuasive. A more solid base is needed for the shift of the business line. The more regressive survey must be done in clothing based on different locations, different regions, and over large sample sizes. In order to get an appropriate sales report, the survey must be done over years. A minimum of five to ten years of survey reports would be sufficient to take the decision of the change in business line. Moreover, the survey must cover a huge region, with different climates, different social structures, different cultures, etc. Further, the survey must include clothing and home product shops of various statuses, big to small. Only then the reports obtained can be said to be sufficient for the decision of increasing the size of the home product and decreasing the size of clothing.
