The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits.”

Sample Essay:

The author in the argument states that businesses these days are looking for ways that create better privileges for them in comparison to their competitors. In order to gain more profit and decrease costs with respect to other competitors. The author asserts that his company can maximize its profit and minimize its costs. Though his claims were well affirmed, the author presents a weak reasoned argument, based on several questionable premises and assumptions, and based solely on evidence the author offers; which cannot accept his argument as valid.

First, the chief issue with the author’s reasoning lies in unsupported premises. Although in recent years with the aid of technology, many organizations have decreased their costs and profits, we should not forget that how much time passes laborers and employers gain more power and request better work conditions from companies. Consequently, the expenditures rise. It is obvious that the author has not considered this part of the problem. For instance, in the argument, the author has given an example of the color film processing industry explaining the cost reduction over a period of 14 years in processing the color films. The author assumes that the same principle applies to the food industry. Since the operation of both industries is different, their methods, equipment, and capability of processing are indeed very different. Clearly, the author fails to mention a suitable example to support his claim. The argument could have been much more transparent if the author would have mentioned an example of the food industry processing frozen foods. In addition, he does not consider that the food industry is dependent on more different factors like weather, farmers, other industries like chemical companies, labor unions, and more. On the contrary, the color film industry has benefited from technological innovation widely. It is like we compare apples and oranges with each other.

Second, the argument claims that over time, the costs of processing have gone down which is again a very poor claim. The author fails to mention the exact time frame and states a generalized statement with no exact and clear idea. To illustrate the claim in his support, the author gives the example of the color film processing industry and states the fact that the cost of film processing was reduced in a 14 years time frame. This fact is unsuccessfully compared with Olympic food's experience of 25 years in the food industry. The author also assumes fact that the technology of frozen food processing will remain constant for more than 25 years and Olympic foods will apply the lessons learned for the next few years to maximize profits. This seems rather the wishful thinking of the author than the substantive evidence. Furthermore, comparing a food company with color film processing is not justified. If he mentioned industries that relate to food processing such as farming, agriculture, or chemical companies instead of the film industry, he would assure his reader better.

Lastly, to conclude, the argument is not accurate for the above-mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing. It could be considerably strengthened if the author clearly mentioned the exact reasons and efficient operations for organizations, comparisons among the same industries, and accounting for changes in technology with time. Without this information, the argument remains unsupported and open to debate.
