Topic:
“Obesity is a great problem among pet dogs, just as it is among their human owners. Obesity in humans is typically caused by consuming more calories than the body needs. For humans, a proper diet for losing weight is a reduced-calorie diet that is high in fiber and carbohydrates but low in fat. Therefore, the best way for dog owners to help their dogs lose weight in a healthy way is to restrict the dog’s diet to Cerberus reduced-calorie dog food, which is high in fiber and carbohydrates but low in fat.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . .etc.
Sample Essay:
The argument presented here says that just like Humans, Dogs are also prone to obesity. This is due to a diet that can cause an accumulation of fat. This can be controlled by reduced calorie dog food which is high in fiber & carbohydrates but low in fat. The argument ignores one very crucial aspect of any weight loss programme which is expert advice and, in this case, veterinary advice. Weight gain isn’t only about excess fats, sometimes it's due to lack of physical activity or some chronic illness.
However, every dog’s case is different. The only dogs who will benefit from over-the-counter reduced calorie dog food will be the ones that need to lose small amounts of weight. Also, one must seek a veterinarian to determine whether their dog’s obesity is a result of a disease. The reason is that in those cases a reduced calorie dog food will not be able to achieve results. For Example, type 2 diabetes & some forms of cancers can cause obesity in a dog. And finally, the weight loss plans involve regular check-ins with the vet, a whole diet plan with physical exercise as well and some post weight loss care.
The first issue to be addressed is whether a dog owner can forgo the veterinarian analysis of a dog's weight and methods. It's not a wise choice because every dog is different from another and their needs are different. For example, a larger breed needs more calories than an average sized dog but how many more calories do they need is a question that can be answered by a veterinarian. If we take another example, some formulations have high protein, some seek to increase metabolism and burn calories more quickly. There are some which contain high fiber that can stop your dog from begging for more food as they feel full. A study published in “Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association '' claims that reduced calorie food might contain more calories than previously consumed.
The argument also presumes, albeit falsely, that all obesity occurs due to accumulation of fat or high caloric intake. But it's proven that some diseases also promote obesity in dogs which can’t be solved with a specialized diet. Especially if the disease remains un-diagnosed. In such cases it's important for a dog-owner to visit a vet. They need to get their dogs diagnosed because illnesses that promote obesity are chronic or grave in nature. In such cases, weight loss shouldn’t be the priority rather treatment of the dog should be given primacy. For Example, a dog that is obese due to diabetes. When put on a weight loss plan, special care must be taken while feeding him/her to avoid fluctuations in their blood glucose levels. This isn’t the case with dogs whose obesity isn’t caused by diabetes.
Finally, it's important to note that reduced calorie dog food isn’t the holy grail of diet plans for dogs. A weight loss programme for obese dogs involves several other elements and diet dog food is just one of them. A dog is given reduced calorie dog food not only because it provides specific nutrients. It also cuts on unnecessary ones rather it isn’t appropriate to reduce the current volume of food.
In conclusion, while it looks like a good decision to switch to regular dog food with reduced calorie dog food, it doesn’t help the dogs with obesity. It only helps lose little amounts of weight that can be reduced by low calorie intake. To genuinely resolve the problem of obesity in dogs, their owners need to visit the vet and get a medically backed weight loss plan best suited for their dog. It’s important to note that in cases where obesity in dogs is caused due to some disease, special dog food will not solve the problem. The disease needs to be treated first before putting your dog on a diet.
