- The entire article gives relevance and uniqueness to the readers by providing reasons and illustrations.
- Strong declarative or assertive statements are created with active language and statements of cause, reasons and effect.
- The supporting statements are formatted and described well, briefed with two or three sentences and concluded the article with a strong point
Topic: The following appeared in a memorandum from the information technology department of a major advertising firm:
“The more efficient a firm’s employees are, the more profitable that firm will be. Improvements in a firm’s information technology hardware and software are a proven way to increase the efficiency of employees who do the majority of their work on computers. Therefore, if our firm invests in the most powerful and advanced information technology available, employee productivity will be maximized. This strategy ensures that every dollar spent on enhanced information technology will help to increase our firm’s profit margins.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Sample Essay:
The argument states as noticed in a memorandum of a top advertising firm that as a method to ace up the profit margins, the firm should invest in its information technology department. It has been provided that, since most of the employees are engrossed in information technology works, development in its hardware and software will result in developed profit margins. So, it will also result in elevated employee productivity and morale. Though this reason seems to be justified by probing deep into it, it can be said that the argument is originally a vague and ambiguous one.
The first factor that the author has focused on is the improvement of the information technology department which would result in increased productivity and profit margin. The argument has said that since most employees spend time working on their computers, there is a need to refurbish the hardware and software. But the author has nowhere mentioned the present condition of the computers, or the things accompanying them. The argument also doesn’t throw light on whether the employees actually need improvement in the hardware and software, or in any other factor. It may happen that they actually require a raise in their salaries since there has not been from last year. It may also happen that they actually require a bigger space to work in, or a proper canteen attached to their office where they can relax for some time. The author should have interacted with the employees to determine the main way to increase productivity rather than assuming the method of improving the information technology department.
Secondly, the author has nowhere mentioned any direct connection between employee productivity and profit maximization. The argument couldn’t provide any information based on the ways that employee productivity could impact the profitability of the company. Though it is true that the profit is decided by considering both sales and costs, it is also true that employee productivity will positively affect the profit margin. But, if the cost incurred in increasing productivity doesn’t result in an equal profit margin then the approach would be a failed one. In fact, the firm will incur losses if the costs spent on refurbishing the hardware and software of the company don’t result in an equal margin of profit.
Lastly, the argument has mentioned a very serious issue by only talking about the employees who work on their computers. It is not possible for an advertising firm to have only technical employees. A company is formed by both technical and non-technical employees like clerks, content writers, administrative departments, graphic designers, and more. If the firm is only thinking of improving the quality of the information technology department, keeping the rest of the departments devoid of enhancement, then it will eventually result in very low employee morale. Let alone profit margins, the employee productivity will decrease, it will make the other non-technical employees question the firm’s authenticity, and corporate social responsibility approaches, and that will result in very low productivity. The author has been oblivious in mentioning the other departments and their performance as well.
To conclude, it can be stated that the author should have mentioned the other factors contributing to the increased profit margin, how it relates to employee productivity, and how the other departments will be benefited from these approaches. With the presence of all these factors, the argument would have been a strong one.
