  • The entire article gives relevance and uniqueness to the readers by providing reasons and illustrations.
  • Strong declarative or assertive statements are created with active language and statements of cause, reasons, and effect.

Topic: The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:

“The profitability of Croesus Company, recently restored to private ownership, is a clear indication that businesses fare better under private ownership than under public ownership.”

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

Sample Essay:

Privatization of the economy is a controversial topic to discuss for the economists of almost all countries. The author of the argument has stated that the profitability of Croesus Company started to boom after it has been restored to private ownership. To support this, the author has further added that most of the businesses that have experienced flourishing business have private ownership. The argument further states that businesses encounter more profits under private ownership than public ownership. The author of the argument has completely based the claims on assumptions. There is no evidence governing the fact that businesses earn higher profits under private ownership than in public ownership. The argument is highly vague and unsubstantiated and the reasons are explained below.

Firstly, the author has gone ahead with the claim that private ownership leads to scaling up of profits than publicly owned businesses. There is no evidence provided to support this claim. The author has nowhere mentioned if Croesus Company is representing all the privately owned businesses. Since only one company and its profit maximization has been mentioned, the audiences are in doubt as to how many additional companies have experienced the same trend. There is no evidence in the argument stating the total number of private and public companies in the market and how many of them have seen profit maximization upon conversion. Relying only on the singular example of Croesus Company would make this claim a vague one. And drawing a conclusion based on this single claim would result in a fallacious decision.

Secondly, the author has focused more on Croesus Company and its restoration to a privately owned business. The argument only considers the reason behind Croesus’ growth is restoring their business to private ownership. The argument doesn’t consider many other reasons that can contribute to the profit maximization of Croesus Company. One very prominent reason is, that a very close competitor of the Croesus Company which is also a private company has closed down recently. This has made Croesus Company gain the position, and attract customers. Croesus Company may be the only company dealing with that kind of product, thus leveraging its monopoly business. It may also happen because the company has reduced its prices due to immense supply, and the customers didn’t miss the chance to grab the deals. Another very obvious reason can be, that during the transition period from public to private ownership, the government has offered certain advantageous fiscal policies. All these points are not discussed by the author, leading the audience to question if the transition from public to private ownership really does affect profit maximization and revenue. Also, the argument didn’t throw light on the facts and figures of the private and publicly owned companies.

Lastly, there is no evidence of other companies and their experiences mentioned. It was very much required for the author to have mentioned the names and transition experiences from public to private ownership. Without proper information, the readers cannot completely base the assumptions given. In fact, the argument only provides brief information on the change in the case of Croesus Company. No figures have been given for the before and after profits.

In conclusion, it can be said that the author should have properly studied the public and private companies, considered their growth, assessed if all or most of the companies are experiencing profit maximization or only Croesus Company, and should have also mentioned the count of total companies in that area.
