“A welder received an order to make a 1 million litre cube-shaped tank. If he has only 4*2 meter sheets of metal that can be cut, how many metal sheets will be required for this order? (1 cubic meter = 1,000 litres)”– is a topic of the GMAT Quantitative reasoning section of GMAT. This question has been taken from the book “GMAT Quantitative Review”. To solve GMAT Problem Solving questions a student must have knowledge about a good amount of qualitative skills. The GMAT Quant topic in the problem-solving part requires calculative mathematical problems that should be solved with proper mathematical knowledge.0
Answer
Approach Solution 1
1 million litre cube shaped tank = \(\frac{1,000,000}{1,000}\) = 1000 cubic meter tank
This means that we have cube shaped tank with a side of 10 m
i.e., \(10^3=1000\)
Therefore, surface area of this tank = number of the faces of the cube * area of each face
Surface area of this tank = \(6*10^2\) = 600\(m^2\)
Number of 4 * 2 = 8\(m^2\) sheets needed = \(\frac{600}{8}\) = 75
Correct option: E
Approach Solution 2
Firstly, create a 3D structure in your mind.
We can see that side of the cube = 10 m
Secondly now how you could arrange 4 * 2 sheets in a 10 m side.
Interestingly if you draw the sheets in \(10*10\) side, you would only be able to put 12 such sheets in it with the area of \(2*2\) remaining: \(12*6\) = 72 sheets
Now as there are six sheets (in total) for the cube, so a total of 3 more sheets required to join adjacent sides.
So, total sheets needed are 75 sheets.
Correct option: E
