Sri Ramanujar Engineering College

Mr.M. Nithyasundar is one of the pioneers in the education industry in Tamil Nadu. He believes that the darkness of ignorance and illiteracy can be driven out only through education. He is one of the founding members of 'The Swamy Educational Trust'. The trust was formed in 1992 to meet the educational requirements of the public and to serve the cause of rural and community development. It aimed at giving Technical Education to the rural as well as urban society. With this idea, they started Madras Industrial School which trains people in ITI skills, a Matriculation school, a Polytechnic Institute, and Sri Ramanujar Engineering College. Mr.Nithyasundar believes poverty can be eradicated only through education and that's the reason they mainly concentrate on educating rural students and urban poor. Mr.Nithyasundar holds the position of Correspondent in all these institutes and plays an active role in the management of the trust.

Great teachers engineer learning experiences that maneuver the students into the driver's seat

Great teachers don’t teach, while good teachers care about students, know the content and know how to explain it. They expect and demand high levels of performance from students. Although, there’s a small difference when it comes to great teachers. Great teachers engineer learning experiences that maneuver the students into the driver's seat. Students learn best by personally experiencing learning that is physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Teaching is an art and learning this art continuously is what has kept me connected to the education and teaching field.

The students are given opportunities to interact with the industry experts to gain relevant subject knowledge

As Sri Ramanujar Engineering College is affiliated to Anna University, we follow the syllabus prescribed by the University. However, the difference lies in the way we impart knowledge to our students. We have introduced several new labs in the field of IT, CSE, Electronics etc., equipped with state of art technologies which helps the students learn engineering practically. We also take the students on regular industrial visits which help them interact with professionals from the industry and expose them to real life scenarios and uses of what they learn in their college.

Students are given exposure via various activities for their holistic development

At SREC, we believe in all round development of students. The physical, mental, psychological development of a student is equally important to getting a degree. We have regular symposiums that are organized by our students to showcase their technical and non technical skills. Students from other colleges take part in these competitions, which enable peer-to-peer learning and exposes them to students across the state. There are industrial visits and internships where students interact and work with industry professionals and gain immense practical knowledge. We organize regular guest lectures where highly acknowledged people from corporate visit campus and interact with students. This way the students understand the exact challenges faced in the industry and also know the skills required to get employed.

We make sure the HODs are given autonomy and decision making power for the upliftment of the department

I believe in a unique style of management, management through autonomy. At SREC, every individual be it a faculty member, student etc., are a part of the decision making process. The heads of departments are given autonomy and decision making power to do what is best for their department. All the decisions are supervised by the principal to ensure they all are in line with the vision of the college.

Engineering is an evergreen field and industry requires quality engineering graduates to help them grow

As they say, life is a paradox. Mobile phones and the internet which we used to see as a challenge earlier, as students tend to waste a lot of time on them, has become the savior now during this ongoing pandemic. Our current and a long standing challenge has been rebuilding the image of Engineering in the minds of students. Due to the poor portrayal of engineering graduates in movies, more and more students are not preferring taking it up. However, engineering is an evergreen field and there is a huge requirement for quality engineers in all the sectors in India and abroad. We are organizing regular webinars and sessions for students to educate them about the various opportunities available in the engineering field.

Students should explore the career choices but make a firm decision in the direction they want to be in

An advice to the youth and aspiring students is that the decisions they make regarding education are all among the most important they will make in their entire life. The quality for the rest of their life is largely determined by their career, professional and personal satisfaction they achieve. I also urge students with a genuine interest in preparing for the best jobs in today's global economy. Our main aim is to give quality education for every student at minimum cost.

We started our Educational Trust back because we wanted to educate students irrespective of their social and economic backgrounds

The reason why we started our Educational Trust back in 1992 was because we wanted to educate students irrespective of their social and economic backgrounds. It is very important for us at SREC that every student who enters one of our institutions feels welcomed and does not experience any sort of discrimination. We have a variety of scholarships for students who come from weaker sections of the society and a few meritorious students get full fee waivers too. We focus strongly on building the soft skills and English communication skills of our students as this is one way to build confidence in students with rural backgrounds. We follow an open door policy where any student can reach out to the Principal or Management to convey their grievance. At SREC quality education is provided to every interested student.

We are proud of our Alum and their achievements; and they are one of our biggest strengths

Many of our alumni are working in prestigious companies and in leadership roles. We are in regular touch with our alumni and invite many of them on campus to give guest lectures and to inspire the students. They have always been the backbone of our college when it came to placements or internship opportunities to current students. Apart from that, SREC’s biggest strengths are our location and fee structure. We are one of the closest engineering colleges located in Vandalur, right in the middle of Chennai city. Our fee structure is quite modest compared to any other engineering college as our sole aim to eradicate poverty and illiteracy through education.
