Aarti Karandikar is Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Engineering Department for Data Science at Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management, Nagpur, Maharashtra. She did her M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. She has 20 years of teaching experience. She has more than 40 publications in refereed journals and conferences. Her areas of interest include data mining, data analysis, and remote sensing.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Inspiration to give best to society by educating students”

The reason I opted for this education sector is that it is the best tool to improve the society and life of millions of students through my efforts. The education sector has given me a chance to contribute my bit to shape the future generation. 

What factors do you take into consideration while designing the curriculum of the course?

“Emerging and all time changing demands of industry”

The curriculum is a unique amalgamation of computer science fundamentals and data science knowledge. The students will be equipped with the essential training of quantitative knowledge, statistical theory, data mining technology and computing tools for the effective use and analysis of big and complex data for real-world applications. A hands-on and case based approach is followed so as to enable the students to have a deeper understanding of the subjects.

What prerequisites and skills are required for students to enroll in this course?

“Curiosity to explore and basic knowledge of algebra, probability and statistics”

A curious mind, a strong will to explore things, and a keen interest in learning new things are the key qualities that will help any student to excel in this field. Some exposure to programming will come handy. 

How are students prepared to face real-world challenges?

“Regular talks and seminars are organized for students”

The department conducts workshops to keep the students updated with the latest technologies. We at RCOEM believe in developing the overall personality of a student. For this, various activities are conducted throughout the year. Also seminars and lectures are organized by the college where eminent personalities give speeches and educate students about the real-time scenarios and demands of the ever-changing industries.

How do you contribute to improving research quality for the institute?

“By encouraging students to work on real-time projects”

There has been a considerable increase for quality research publications in national and international journals. External and internal research funding has also increased. Many faculties are involved in consultancy work. Students along with faculty members are working on research projects. 

How Covid-19 Pandemic impact your institute?

“Taking online classes was a real challenge for both students and faculties”

The faculty members and the students have coped very well with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic. The transition from classroom teaching to online teaching has been smooth due to continuous efforts of the faculty and students. The institute has defined a standard operating procedure for all stakeholders.
