Located on a 162-hectare site, GCE, Salem-11, was started in the year 1966 as a part of 3rd Five-year plan by the Govt. of Tamilnadu. The institute is NAAC accredited with B+ grade and BE Electrical and Electronics Engineering is NBA accredited.

GCE, Salem Admission Procedure

GCE, Salem courses are available in six specializations at both the UG and PG levels. For the UG program, seats are allocated based on merit obtained in the qualifying examination. Additionally, students are shortlisted for PG courses based on their TANCET or GATE scores. The BE course is offered for 4 years with a first-year fee of INR 13,600 and a total intake of 480 seats. Admission to the BE program is based on TNEA scores. Candidates who would like to apply to the institute may do so online either through the institute directly or through the relevant examination board.

The college is spread over 400 acres on a lush green campus surrounded by hills. The College offers many facilities like the Music Club, Dance Club, Photography Club, Arts Club, English Literary Club, Sports, Institute Interaction, and NSS. All the departments of GCE Salem are equipped with computer facilities, and Internet Connectivity, and have strong tie-ups with R&D labs & Industries. The college also provides hostel facilities with separate blocks for the First, Second, Third, and Final year BE students and individual blocks for the ME students. The institution's infrastructure also includes a library, auditorium, dispensary, canteen block, and sports center.

GCE, Salem Scholarships

GCE offers a variety of scholarships and fee waiver programs to its students. Given below is a list of scholarships offered to the students of GCE:

  • BC/MBC/DNC & BCM is a Tamil Nadu State Government Scholarship Scheme. To be eligible for this scholarship the candidate's family annual income must be below INR 2.5 Lakhs. The scholarships provided range approximately from INR 5,000 for Days Scholars (FG Students), INR 7,000 for Days Scholars (Non-FG Students), INR 9,000 for Hostellers (FG Students), and INR 11,000 for Hostellers (Non-FG Students) every year.
  • SC/ST & SCC Scholarship is another Tamil Nadu State Government Scholarship Scheme. The scholarship family's annual income must be below INR 2.5 Lakhs. The approximate scholarship offered to Day Scholars is INR 18,000 and to Hostellers INR 25,000 every year.
  • SC/ST & SCC Hosteller Higher Education Special Scholarship Scheme is offered to students who have a family annual income below INR 2.5 lakhs with a scholarship of INR 8,000 every year.
  • Differently Abled Scholarship is another scholarship provided to the students of GCE who are differently abled and hold an ID Card and Medical Certificate stating the same. The candidates must also hold a UDID Card and a mark sheet of their previous exam with a minimum of 40%  marks. Such candidates are given INR 12,000 worth of scholarships every year.
  • A scholarship is awarded under the NSP – Minority (MCM) Scholarship scheme worth INR 10,000 for day scholars and INR 12,000 for hostellers. This is awarded to minority students only with an annual family income below INR 2.5 lakhs.

The admission process of the college is conducted in offline mode and involves filling out forms. Since GCE is a government college, admission is based solely on merit which makes the process relatively straightforward. Ques. Where is the college located?

Ans. Government College of Engineering, Salem-11, started during the Third Five-year plan in 1966 is located on a 162 hectares site surrounded by hills. GCE, Salem was then the Third Engineering Institution in Tamil Nadu. The first batch of students was selected for the academic year 1966-1967. The institution offers  6 UG and 6 PG programs.

Ques. Are there any hostel facilities provided in GCE, Salem?

Ans. GCE offers hostel facilities to its students with a capacity of 569 seats for boys and 279 for girls. The principal administers it, the ex-officio warden with the assistance of the associate warden, hostel superintendents, deputy wardens, and resident tutors. At the end of each year, membership is terminated and the rooms with furniture, fittings, etc., shall be handed over in fact by the members. Residing in the hostel for any period does not confer any right of membership for the next period. The deputy warden shall make allotment of rooms under orders of the warden. Residents should be present in the hostel between 6:30 pm and 6:30 am. If students want to go out to town, they should write their names in the register intended for giving time off. Leaving and expected time of return. No resident is permitted to stay outside the hostels during the night without the written permission of her parents and the written permission of the deputy warden. Students will be allowed to go home only if there is a written request for the same from the same parent/guardian on valid grounds only. Going home too frequently is not permitted.
