Dr. J Maria Lenin Prathap has been working as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Department at Madha Institute of Engineering and Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He has done M. Phil., M. Sc., B. Ed. as part of his academics and is currently pursuing PhD. His area of specialization is Number Theory and he has been part of Madha Institute since 2014.

Being a Faculty of the Mathematics Department, what are your responsibilities towards the students?

"Providing them good quality education and amenities is my responsibility"

As an Assistant Professor of the Mathematics department, the ambiance of my responsibilities is very vast and along with being an educator for my students, I have to also play the role of a mentor and a good friend for them to resolve their academic and personal issues and guide them whenever they get stuck somewhere. Apart from that, I need to guide them for their projects, technical research papers and events. 

How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"I am responsible to teach and guide students and ensure their overall development"

To ensure a cordial relationship with my dear students and amazing faculty members, I keep interacting with them on a regular basis and make myself easily approachable whenever they need my support, guidance or suggestions. And I also connect with my students outside the classroom to address their academic queries, to know what changes they want in my teaching methodologies and to make them feel they are valuable assets for us. Last but not the least, I ensure their active participation during lectures, design lesson plans as per their needs to give them the best education. 

Which best practices are offered by your department to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

"We use latest technologies and tools to take lectures and conduct experiments"

Our college does follow different approaches to upskill our students. And to educate our students beyond the curriculum, we use smart apps and other technologies to take normal and extra lectures and also to show practical demonstrations. In addition to this, we have established a Social Beneficial Innovation program for our students through which students address and try to fix the problem of society people by using their skills, knowledge and experience. to help the society. We also encourage them to write and present technical papers, improve their soft skills and sit for mock interviews.

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

"We regularly update the curriculum after consultation with industry experts and academicians"

We do rigorous analysis and calculation of industrial trends, development and expectations while drafting and updating our curriculum and suggestions from teachers , students and eminent experts are also considered while modifying anything in it. And to get the changes doen, a mail for approval is sent to Anna University or changes are represented in front of the Board Members of syllabus framing committee.

How do you prepare your students to deal with this competitive world?

"By motivating them to believe in their capabilities and upgrading their skills and experience"

We use different kinds of teaching-learning approaches to prepare our students for this ever changing and competitive world. We make them familiar with shortcuts and key words to learn Mathematical formulas and concepts. Apart from this, we keep encouraging them to have faith in themselves, make best use of every learning opportunity that comes their way, participate in events like seminars, conferences, take industrial projects and utilize their classroom learning for the same and lastly take part in college co-curricular activities.

Which extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of students?

"We organise Mathematical Forums twice a month along with events like seminars and workshops"

For the purpose of enhancing the skills of our students, exposing them to real world challenges, making them more confident and industry ready, we organize Mathematical Forums twice a month. And we provide our complete support and assistance to students to coordinate all the activities like maintaining the environment, saving electricity and spreading awareness in people on healthcare etc. Lastly, seminars and webinars are also conducted by us regularly. 

When you joined this college, what was your vision for it and how are you trying to achieve the same?

"My objective was to improve teaching methodologies of our institute by utilizing my experience"

When I joined Madha Institute of Engineering and Technology as an Assistant Professor, my vision at that time was to simplify the complex education practices and make students capable enough so that they can work on real time projects and provide some innovative solutions. And to make my dream come true, I have been putting all my experience and knowledge to improve the education quality by conducting a wide variety of research on subjects. 

How does your college enhance the faculty skills and prepare them as per industry standards?

"They are upskilled and trained through FDPs and skill oriented training programs"

For the purpose of upskilling our faculty members and helping them to deliver best to students, we arrange faculty development programs and skill oriental programs as and when required. And to further supplement their subject knowledge, we conduct practical training, guest lectures by inviting industry experts and also assign innovative projects to them to enhance their research skills.

The greatest pillars of our institute strength is our amazing infrastructure and library which helps us to fulfill our objective of providing quality education to students.
