Mr.Sumit Shome is the Registrar of the Camellia Institute of Engineering and Technology. He believes that having an unlimited appetite for learning and acquisition of the same can get you the success you desire.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Sharing experiences and imparting knowledge”

It is often said that for achieving success, you need proper education. And only education can lead to a successful and satisfactory life. Hence the education I acquired and my journey as a student has encouraged me to remain associated with the education sector.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“Having a structured approach to lead the team”

I believe that leaders must have a vision and articulate it clearly to provide direction for the group he or she works with. Leaders need to provide leadership opportunities for others to foster growth and share responsibility for attaining goals. A leadership philosophy is essentially a belief system that guides decision-making. It consists of core principles, perspectives, and values. When we define what they are, and use them to shape a leadership philosophy statement, our behaviours and decisions will remain consistent. My leadership philosophy is important for several reasons, regardless of my institute size. When I have a personal leadership philosophy, I will be more apt to be consistent with my actions and behaviours. Once my employees understand why I act the way I do, they'll be more comfortable with my leadership style.

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your institute?

“Having a personalized communication system”

Apart from the conventional marketing strategies like market research, advertisement in different media, we conduct an “All India Scholarship Test” in different schools and colleges in various states in India. That scholarship test consists of 30 multiple choice type questions in different subjects like physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and general knowledge. The main motto to conduct the scholarship test is to get the meritorious and financially needy students so that we can help the society under CSR programme as well as get the meritorious students to develop the quality of education and overall performance of the college. I believe that the students are the pillar of the institute. The outcome of higher education shall lead to the enhancement of the economy by developing graduates having confidence and potential to contribute towards society. In achieving this goal, the education process at our college shall create a learning environment conducive to emerging professional competencies and at the same time a good citizen.

Any insights into how your Institute could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

“Being welcoming of the diversity”

Apart from the scholarships provided by the state or central government, we encourage the student community of Class X and Class XII to appear in our “All India Scholarship Test” conducted by our Group of Colleges free of cost. The students get scholarships according to the marks they get INR 1000 per mark. i.e. if a student scores 15 out of 30, he/she will get INR 15000 as a scholarship and the scholarship amount is straightway deducted from his/her fees at the time of admission. We help students understand that classmates from other races are only a difference in upbringing and background. We also make sure that the lesson places focus on the culture and histories of all students in the classroom, not only those from sound economic backgrounds.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the institute and the students are?

“My responsibilities are not limited to certain areas”

Generally, as a registrar, I am located at several intersections viz. academic life and administrative life, protecting student data and making it actionable, supporting student-led pathways and scaffolding them. Apart from it, I play a major role in growth in the certificate and micro-credential programs that are expanding the types and format of credentials issued under the seal of the institution and efforts to make credentials more comprehensive as learner records and more insightful to employers and other stakeholders.

What do you think should be the College’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“Using student knowledge to improve the functioning of the communities”

The college’s priority undoubtedly is excellence, equity and expansion. We need to gather further support for multidisciplinary research, improve quality of teaching and double the number of faculty. It is our responsibility to enable students to acquire a body of knowledge in a specific discipline including global digitization aspects. The college collectively needs to think critically towards effective implementation. Improving student abilities in utilizing modern gadgets and tools to make significant contributions to the missions of their prospective employers are also on the priority list.

What do you see as institutes greatest strengths?

How do you tend to establish a healthy relation and environment in your institute/ university?

“Combining and making use of every element necessary to achieve the same”

For students to learn, they must feel safe, engaged, connected and supported in their classrooms. These conditions of learning are the elements of an institution's positive climate. I, as a representative of the group, always try to ensure to keep these up in the following manner ;

  • Good Relationships
  • Clear Communication
  • Trust

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“Be humble, sincere, and attentive”

Think before you act. The simple but effective process of thought will help you avoid making critical mistakes that could cost you your freedom, education or your life. Find an adult mentor who knows what is the best and fittest for you. Do not imitate others. Avoid being part of the crowd.
