IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2023: IIT JAM exam is conducted for 7 subjects- Biotechnology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, and Geology. IIT JAM exam pattern is the same for all the 7 subjects. No changes are expected in IIT JAM 2023 exam pattern from the previous year.

- The exam duration will be 180 minutes and the medium of examination will be English only.

- In section A, 10 questions will be of 1 mark and 20 of 2 marks. In section B, 10 questions of 2 marks each will be asked. From Section C, 10 questions of 1 mark and 10 questions of 2 marks each will be there in the paper.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section A
- Number of Questions – 30 questions having 10 questions of 1 mark each and 20 questions of two marks each. Each question will have four choices out of which only one choice will be a correct one.
- Nature of Questions – Objective type (MCQs)
- Exam Mode – Online (CBT)
- Exam Medium – The question papers at all exam centers will be in English only.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section B
- Number of Questions – 10 questions only.
- Nature of Questions – Multiple Select Questions (MCQs). Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.
- Exam Mode – Online (CBT)
- Exam Medium – The question papers at all exam centers will be in English only.
- Marking Scheme – The candidate gets full credit only if he/she selects all the correct answers only and no wrong answers.
- Negative Marking – There are no negative and no partial marking provisions.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section C
- Number of Questions – 20 questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each.
- Nature of Questions – Numerical Answer Type (NAT). For NAT type questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor.
- Exam Mode – Online (CBT)
- Exam Medium – The question papers at all exam centers will be in English only.
- Marking Scheme – For correct answers candidates will get 2 marks.
- Negative Marking – There are no negative and no partial marking provisions.

How to Prepare for IIT JAM 2023?
Start your Exam Preparation Well in Advance:
- It will be beneficial for you to begin your exam preparation during your graduation. Most of the questions are asked from what you study during your graduation years, therefore, you must be very thorough with the degree course.

IIT JAM 2023 Virtual Calculator
In IIT JAM 2023 examination, there will be a provision for using an online virtual calculator. Therefore, candidates will not be allowed to bring their own calculators.
- Watches, Mobile phones, or any other electronic devices are not allowed inside the examination hall.
- Tables, Charts, graph sheets, are also not allowed inside the examination hall.
- A scribble pad will be provided for rough work to each candidate by the exam conducting body.
- Candidates will have to write their name and registration number before using it.
- The candidate can possess only one scribble pad at one time.
- Second scribble pad will only be given when the candidate returns the first one.
IIT JAM 2023 Exam Pattern: Important Instructions
- Mobile phones or any other electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall.
- Charts, graph sheets, tables, are also NOT allowed inside the examination hall.
- A scribble pad will be provided for rough work and this should be returned at the end of the examination
- Candidates are required to select the answer for MCQ and MSQ type questions, and to enter the answer for NAT questions using only a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad (the keyboard of the computer will be disabled).
- At the end of the 3-hours, the computer will automatically close the examination.
- Use of unfair means by a candidate in JAM 2023, whether detected at the time of examination, or at any other stage, will lead to cancellation of their candidature as well as disqualification of the candidate from appearing in JAM in future.

IIT JAM 2023 Exam Pattern FAQs
Ques: Are there any changes in IIT JAM 2023 marking scheme?
Ans: No there are no changes introduced in the IIT JAM 2023 marking scheme as of now. It is expected to be the same as in previous years. Negative marking is applicable only for section A i.e for each wrong answer in the 1 mark question, 1/3 marks will be deducted and for 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted. No marks will be deducted for un-attempted questions.
Ques: How many questions will be there in IIT JAM 2023 question paper?
Ans: Based on IIT JAM exam pattern,the question paper will be divided into 3 sections. Section A will have a total of 30 MCQ, section B will have 10 MSQ and section C will have 20 NTA questions.
Ques: Is there any negative marking in the case of MSQ type questions in IIT JAM 2023?
Ans: No. There is no negative marking in MSQ and also in NAT-type questions. Candidates can attempt all the questions of sections b and c without any hesitation of negative marks. However, no partial credit will be given for partially correct answers in the case of MSQs.
Ques: After the removal of the Biological Sciences paper which new paper has been introduced in IIT JAM?
Ans: Economics (EN) has been added as a new paper in IIT JAM. Candidates with a background in economics can apply for this pattern. The exam pattern of this paper and of the other six is the same.
Ques: What is the marking scheme of NAT questions in IIT JAM 2023?
Ans: There will be a total of 20 NAT question in section C. Out of the total 20 questions, 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each will be there. There will be no provision for negative marking.
