Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) companies are owned by the Government of India or any Indian State Government. In a PSU company, around 50% or more of the paid-up share capital is owned by the said government. Some large PSU companies include Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, State Bank of India, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, etc.

Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) can further be classified into three categories such as the following:

  • Maharatna: Companies with an annual turnover of INR 20,000 crore on average for three years and an average net worth of combined value of the assets must be worth INR 10,000 crore will be given the maharatna status.
  • Navratna: CPSEs with a Schedule ‘A’ along with a Miniratna Category 1 status can be eligible for navratna, which gives power to the PSU to invest up to INR 1000 crores without government approval.
  • Miniratna: CPSEs that have made profits in the last three years continuously and have a positive net worth are eligible for miniratna grant status.
