Ques. What should I choose between IIT, Kanpur (materials science and engineering) and IIT, Kharagpur (metallurgy and materials science) for M.Tech and why?

● Top Answer By Epil Gagrai on 24 Apr 23

Ans. Both IIT Kanpur Material Science and Engineering and IIT KGP Metallurgy are excellent programs. To choose one of these, you first determine where your interests lie. done  If you are inclined towards the field of materials science, then choosing IIT Kanpur will be beneficial for you. In fact, it has many faculties that are globally known for their achievements and contributions in the field of electronic materials, biomaterials, optical materials, ceramics, metallic glasses, and corrosion. On the other hand, IIT KGP Metallurgy is a viable option for those interested in areas like physical metallurgy, powder metallurgy, characterization techniques, and material testing. The location of the Institute is excellent for metallurgy eight Tata Steel and National Metallurgical Laboratory are both in close proximity to the institute. This is good news for research enthusiasts. Both the institutes and programs are good and thus the final decision should be based on your area of interest considering the fact that IIT Kanpur has a much more rigid culture in terms of academics.Read more

Ques. What is the scope of placement of an M.Tech student in metallurgical and materials technology from IIT Bhubaneswar ?

● Top Answer By Ashish Vedwal on 14 Aug 20

Ans. M.Tech in metallurgical and materials technology at the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar will introduce you with immense exposure opportunities, good Infrastructure, and well-qualified faculties. However, when it comes to placements for M.Tech students particularly in metallurgical and materials technology, the placements are not satisfactory enough when compared to other IITs. The average placement percentage is around 60% - 65%. Also, you’ll find that the salary packages offered to the students are not as per expectations. The Median salary offered to metallurgical and materials technology M.tech students at IIT Bhubaneswar are around 6 lakhs. Furthermore, if we look at the past placement records, there has been no improvement in the placement package offered to students for this program over the years. Not many companies recruit students from the metallurgical and materials technology field. Few companies visiting the campus are TATA Consulting Engineering Ltd., Hero Motocorp Ltd., Cognizant Technology Solutions, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., and Infosys Ltd. You’ll be able to back up an average placement in these companies if you are good in your studies, but still, you cannot have very high expectations as there is no 100% placement, and students even struggle to get jobs involving core work related to their field.Read more

Ques. What is the placement scope after M.Tech. in material science & engineering from IIT Gandhinagar?

● Top Answer By Rishav Rahul on 22 Feb 21

Ans. There is no scope for M.Tech in material science and engineering. It is suggested not to opt for this particular course at any of the engineering colleges in India. No colleges have produced any skilled Material Science engineers. The curriculum is 40 years old and there are no private electrical companies in India. Most importantly, there is absolutely no demand for material science engineers in India and it should not be taught in India. The current M.Tech programs running in the country are a scam. You will not be able to find any demand in the industry. The syllabus of M.Tech is forced upon engineers to run the GATE coaching industry. 99.99% of M.Tech graduates do not get the desired salary and respect of a researcher. The average income is only 2-3 LPA which is very low. Most of them become clerks in the service-based industries.Read more

Ques. Which is better for an MTech in metallurgy - IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT BHU?

● Top Answer By Moira Sen on 14 Aug 20

Ans. As it’s a new IIT, the Metallurgy department is still developing in IIT Bhubaneswar. But this department is equipped with state-of-art lab equipment. School of Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (SMMME) in IIT Bhubaneswar has an excellent fusion of faculty members from diverse backgrounds of minerals, metals, and materials engineering. This school has signed a partnership with the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) at Bhubaneswar. There is also a student and faculty exchange program with Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at Warwick University, UK, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Also, according to 2019 placement statistics, 68% of the total M.Tech batch was placed with core and other sectors with salary packages ranging from 10 – 16 lakh per annum. According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2019, IIT BHU ranks at 14. The department of Metallurgy in IIT BHU is well equipped with lab instruments. Being an old IIT it also has great facilities and a large alumni base. Companies like Tata Steel, Tata motors, Saint Gobain, Flipkart, Oyo, Maruti Suzuki, etc visit the campus for placement of M.tech students. IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT BHU, both the IITs are good choices for doing M.Tech in Metallurgy. So, pick one according to your convenience.Read more

Ques. Is there any chance of getting into IIT Bhubaneswar for an M.Tech in metallurgy and material science with a GATE score of 540 in the mechanical engineering stream?

● Top Answer By Tara Kaushal on 14 Aug 20

Ans. The candidates with a minimum of 60% aggregate or 6.5 CGPA in B.Tech with a valid score are eligible to apply in IIT Bhubaneswar for metallurgy and material science. The shortlisting of the candidates will be based on the GATE score only. The selection is based on 70% weightage on the GATE score and 30% in written test and interview. So for admissions in the metallurgy and material science specializations, there is an average cut off GATE score for the year 2020 which is 460-470. Since GATE is a relative and dynamic grading examination so the best way is to achieve more score. In other words, a better GATE score gives more weightage on your selection in IIT Bhubaneswar for M.Tech with metallurgy and material science specialization.Read more
