BTech Civil Engineering admissions are done through entrance examination mode or direct admission through quota. There are Entrance Exams for Engineering on different levels starting from all india Entrance exams to State Level Entrance Exams. Colleges also take entrance exams to admit students to their own college. The step by step process to get admitted through entrance examinations are given below.

Entrance Exam Based Admission

The most popular engineering entrance exams in the country are JEE Main and JEE Advanced, which are required for admission into primarily public universities. Private institutes also conduct their own examinations or rely on the national/ state level entrance exams. The guide to apply for entrance exam based admission is as follows.

  • Registration: Registration dates are announced days before by the institute. An account needs to be created with basic details like email-id, phone number, etc.

  • Fill up details: Fill up the application form with all necessary details with care. Care must be taken to ensure all details are accurate and correct.

  • Submit documents: Scan and upload all required documents like mark sheets. Documents need to be uploaded in a specific format only, as specified by the institute’s application portal.

  • Application fee: A minimal application fee is to be paid online during the submission of the application form. Payment can be done by all online payment modes.

  • Download admit card: Admit cards are released once all applicants are judged for eligibility. The admit card must be downloaded and printed out to be used on the day of the examination.

  • Examination: Prepare for the exam as per the syllabus and past papers. Appear for the examination on the date announced.

  • Results: Results are announced after a couple of weeks of the exam day. If a candidate is successful in qualifying the entrance examinations, they can move on to the next round.

  • Counseling and admission: Counselling is held for students who have cleared the entrance examinations. The student can now take admission in the BTech Civil Engineering course.

JEE Main examination is conducted by NTA at the national level. It is held in the month of April of each year for admission into undergraduate engineering programs. It is an online examination, conducted over three hours and the paper is of 360 marks.

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced, previously known as IIT JEE, is the second phase of the JEE Main examination. The conducting agency is IIT Delhi. It is also an online examination that covers physics, chemistry, and mathematics. The duration of the paper is 3 hours.

BITSAT

BITSAT is the engineering entrance examination to BITS Pilani. The online examination is held to fill up over 2,000 seats at the university. It is the second most popular examination after JEE Main. Candidates must have scored an aggregate score of 75% at the 10+2 level with PCM and 60% individually in each of the subjects.

SRMJEEE

SRMJEEE is the entrance examination conducted by SRM University for admission into its engineering programs. The online and offline format of the exam is attempted by over 1,500,000 students every year. There are five sections, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, and Aptitude.

ALERT: The last date to apply for SRMJEE has been extended to July 15, due to COVID-19.

COMEDK

COMEDK is a state-level entrance examination conducted by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka. Over 120 institutes offering engineering and architecture undergraduate programs accept the COMEDK score. The paper is held online and is of three hours duration.

  • Prepare a timetable for studying. Include each topic in every subject and stick to the timetable. This will ensure the entire syllabus is covered at least once. Allocate time daily to studies.

With Metallurgy, you can easily learn coding and go for tech companies. NIT Trichy has a great coding culture, so picking up coding skills will not be difficult.  If you plan to prepare for civil services or any other government job, I would suggest you go for civil engineering. When compared to metallurgy, there are fewer job opportunities in the civil department. Ans. B.Tech Civil students get good placement opportunities at decent core companies at NIT Jamshedpur. A good number of non core companies also visit the department for placements.  But by ‘good’ I do not mean very high packages that you can boast of. If this is what you are looking for, you’ll be disappointed. Core branches like Mechanical, Production, Metallurgy and Civil receive decent placements. One can expect very high packages in these branches when studying at top rated institutes like the old IITs and BITS Pilani.  L&T, St.Gobain, Bridge and Roof Corp, Vedanta and ECC offer decent packages to B.Tech Civil students. Most analytics firms allow Civil students to sit for placements, and offer decent packages as well. Capgemini is among the IT firms which allow Civil students, and offer decent packages. BPCL offers comparatively high packages, but allows only top 5 students to apply. JUSCO visits every 2-3 years and offers high packages.  Last year, 97.29% students were successfully placed from B.Tech Civil during NIT Jamshedpur placements. The highest package for the branch was 20 LPA, and the average package was 9.57 LPA.  Instead of just looking at the placement stats, you should also consider your interests and the future prospects of a branch before stepping into it.Read more

There are several advantages of being in IIEST Shibpur and having a degree from the institute. My brother has studied there and the points below are his experience at the institute:  There are excellent faculties in the Civil engineering department, except a couple of faculties who are not that great as evident from student reviews. There are innumerous projects and researches going on in the Civil engineering department at IIEST. The teachers and lecturers are excellent in their guidance for students interested in project works and show a lot of enthusiasm in the same. Above all, IIEST has gained central status a few years back, which ensures the development in research and teaching methodologies even further with time. Ans. I am assuming that you are asking about core civil job profiles. According to my friend at NIT Trichy the placement record for the Civil Engineering branch is quite good. Here is the placement trend for the branch.  Year Civil Engineering 2019-20 81.7% 2018-19 92.1% 2017-18 83.6% According to the placement highlights of the past few years for Civil Engineering the highest CTC offered by the recruiting companies is around 17 LPA. During the placement drive 2020, the average package offered was INR 6 LPA. More job offers are made to the civil engineers from companies such as Oil and other related companies. The salary package offered by a few conglomerates like L&T varies from INR 6.2 LPA for IITians, INR 5.11 LPA for NITians, to INR 3.6 for Local/Private Colleges. This is the general trend. Even IIT Bombay placement offers will not look lucrative compared to their other branches.  The actual reasons for which you should consider Civil Engineering at MNNIT Allahabad are as follows. Higher Studies : The GATE 2017 top 4 rank holders were from MNNIT Allahabad as was the 2nd rank holder in GATE 2016 in the Civil Engineering paper.  Faculty: The faculty is much better than their non-core counterparts and is highly motivated to make their students flourish in the entrance exams. The results speak for themselves. Opportunities other than private companies – Government departments such as Public Works Department (PWD), Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), and various others who select candidates through Engineering Services Examination (ESE). Maharatna and Navratna PSUs take candidates who qualify GATE exam. Private Sector: Private Companies such as Gammon, L&T not only visit campus but also conduct off-campus drives and recruit students.
