If you are already earning a salary as high as INR 71 LPA, I don’t think an MBA from MDI Gurgaon will do you any good. If you have decided on going for an MBA nevertheless, target the top B Schools like IIM A, IIM B, IIM C, XLRI, FMS, or IIM L. Choosing MDI for MBA is recommended only if you have offers from average B Schools like new IIMs, SPJIMR, NITIE, etc.
So first you need to get maximum calls from the top B Schools only then can you make a wise and informed decision.
To start with, around 2,00,000 candidates appeared for the CAT exam. This means that for every percentile, there are about 2000 people.
Now, let's say that your percentile is 95, which implies that the 5 percentile is more than yours. In other words, approximately 10000 candidates have scored better than you in the CAT exam.
Suppose that 2000 candidates did not apply for MDI, which leaves us with 8000 candidates. Looking at your good scores in 10th, 12th, and graduation, you are better than at least 4000 candidates out of the remaining 8000.
So, the number of candidates left now is 4000. In comparison, IIMs and private/government colleges like SP Jain, FMS, etc., there are around 1500 and 1000 seats available, respectively, in the general category, taking BLACKIS seats into consideration.
Assuming that they all choose colleges other than MDI, the probable candidates left for MDI with profiles better than yours would be 4000-(1500+1000) = 1500. Now, the number of seats available in MDI is approximately 350.
Considering the average GDPI, the probability of your selection in MDI would be 350/1500 = .23333. So, you have a 23.3% chance of getting selected for MDI.
Of the 2 options, I will recommend you to go for JBIMS Mumbai. I have various reasons to support my opinion. The most important ones have been listed below
Quality of education: Owing to its location, JBIMS attracts many eminent faculty from the industry to the campus apart from the general guest lectures. Some of these big names include
Placements: The quality of placements at JBIMS is excellent with many big firms visiting the campus. Some of the big names in respective domains are
Industrial Touch: With its splendid location, JBIMS enjoys strong interference with industries. These industries give live projects to the students that provide top-notch learning opportunities. The campus is within walking distance from big shots like HDFC, HUL office, ICICI, BCG, and McKinsey.
Competitions: The students at JBIMS have made their names by participating in National Competitions like HUL LIME, P&G Dream Team, JP Morgan - The Deal, Nomura Investment Banking Case Study Contest, and PepsiCo BIAC.
Alumni base: JBIMS has an elaborate alumni base and has been nicknamed the CEO factory owing to the huge number of CEOs it has given birth to. Some of the most famous ones are
JBIMS is in the vicinity of Marine drive and other places of socialization. The hostel is just five minutes away. Overall the campus and the institute, in general, seem promising and you won’t regret your decision of joining it.
To get admission into Management Development Institute (MDI), the first step is to take the Common Admission Test (CAT) exam. You are eligible to write CAT if you have a recognized bachelor's degree (or professional degree like CA, CS, or ICWA) and have scored an aggregate of 50% (45% for SC/ST and PWD students). Even students in their final year of a bachelor's degree can write the CAT exam.
The admission process at MDI consists of two stages. In the first stage, candidates are shortlisted for interviews based on their CAT score. In the second stage, a Personal Interview (PI) is conducted, and the final selection list is made based on the CAT percentile, Personal Interview, and Application score, which includes X, XII, Academic Diversity, Gender Diversity, and Work Experience.
The weightage for the CAT score in the final selection is 55%, which means a good CAT score boosts the chances of getting selected for the MBA program at MDI. To help you prepare for CAT, MDI offers free resources that can help you understand their pedagogy better, such as three free CAT mocks, one test on each topic (VARC, DILR, Quant) every day, the formula PDFs for all Quant topics for CAT, around 25 solved previous papers of CAT, and a CAT Percentile Predictor.
If you are aspiring to get into MDI, it is important to score well in CAT and prepare well for the Personal Interview.
MDI, located in Gurgaon, continues to grow due to its academic focus and infrastructure. Here are some things that make MDI special:
There are 75 full-time faculty members at MDI Gurgaon, and over 80% of them have either a Ph.D. or an MBA from a top institute. Many of the faculty members have established their expertise in specific research areas.
MDI is situated on a beautiful campus that is 12 km from the International Airport in Delhi. The 40-acre campus is located in the corporate hub of India, providing a unique experience of a creative environment amidst industry action.
MDI is one of the largest schools in India for the training and development of managers. Over 68,000 managers have been trained over 39 years. The institute runs over 100 specifically designed executive development programs each year for top-level, middle-level, and senior-level managers of different organizations.
MDI was the first Indian business school and the second in Asia to be accredited by AMBA. The institute has been accredited regionally and nationally, making it the first Indian B-School to get Triple Crown accreditation. The student exchange program has evolved into an entire gamut of academic exchange that includes dual degree programs, faculty exchange, research collaboration, development of academic materials, etc.
MDI plays host to a bevy of industry leaders who engage with the students by means of guest lectures and workshops.
To be considered for admission to MDI, candidates must have 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA in both X and XII. They must also have a Bachelor’s Degree of a minimum 3 years duration with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in any discipline from any University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions. Initial shortlisting is based purely on the basis of CAT score, academic profile, work experience, etc.
The MDI Gurgaon admission process involves several steps, including applying and scoring the minimum required percentile in CAT, registering and applying for admission to MDI Gurgaon, short-listing for GD-PI-WAT Round, entering the order of program preference for PGPM/PGP-IM/PGP-HRM, and receiving final admission offers based on a diverse set of attributes.
Actually, there is no such thing as academic weightage in FMS, but MDI gives academics weightage. To get a call from MDI, you must score higher than 98.2x for FMS and 95.5x percentile.
FMS is part of Delhi University, and its tuition is significantly lower than that of MDI. FMS fees are around 20-21k, whereas MDI fees are around 28 lakhs, which is much higher than FMS. FMS and MDI both give sectional cutoff weightage. If your academics are strong, it will benefit MDI, but FMS does not give academics weightage.GDPI considers extracurricular activities, work experience, and any other achievement.
MDI EMBA is definitely a good choice if you want to pursue EMBA for
But if you are here just for placement within India, then go for ISB only.
It’s sad to admit that even today Indian Corporates haven’t understood the importance of EMBA as most companies prefer MBA graduates only. They specifically enquire if their MBA program was a 2-year program or a regular MBA.
But ISB’s 1-year executive Management Course along with ISB brand name has been deemed equal in importance by the Indian Corporates to a full-time 2 year MBA. This is despite the fact that many students of the regular MBA program have 3-5 years of experience which is not uncommon even amongst many of the 2-year MBA programme students. EMBA from any other Institute is considered as candidates with a lot of experience which is not true in all the cases.
My answer does mention the required percentile for each of the B Schools you mentioned. But before I proceed I would like to shed light on the fact that the CAT percentile is not the only factor that determines your admission into a B School. There are other factors you need to work on like academic background, work experience, and GD-PI.
MDI
The college offers PGDM admissions on the basis of CAT and GMAT scores. The expected CAT percentile is around 93-95 and the GMAT score is 680+.
Apart from this, the candidates are expected to have above average academic records, work experience and WAT.
JBIMS
The institute accepts CAT, MH-CET, and GMAT. The percentile cutoff for the General Category
CAT: 95
MH-CET: 99.97
GMAT is accepted only for NRIs.
FMS Delhi
This institute is well known for its extremely low fees and the null weightage given to past academics. Thus admissions are based on the CAT percentile for which the cutoff is very high and GD-PI. The CAT percentile can be around 98.3
It is important to note that CAT should not be the only factor to consider while preparing for admission. Interview and GD rounds should also be given equal importance in addition to work experience.
I will highly recommend you to go for MDI Gurgaon as the opportunities that will open up to you are vast. You will get to explore an altogether different world. The main reasons why one should take MDI Gurgaon are
So joining MDI for an MBA is definitely a good choice.
There is no specific profile that is able to make it into MDI Gurgaon. Some are able to make it into MDI even with the 94 percentile and some are not able to get even with the 98 percentile. It’s the personal interview and GD round that comes into play here. The ones with lower percentiles usually have exceptionally good communication skills. The ones that make it into MDI with high percentile usually have decent work experience and profile.
But for MBA-IM there are many with mid-94–95 percentiles and decent profiles.
The conclusion is that you either need
Or
Or
A rich blend of the three increases your chances of getting into MDI Gurgaon drastically.
