What CAT percentile do I require to get calls from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS and MDI Gurgaon?

    Nikkil Visha
Anuraag DasStudied at MBA from NMIMS (2020)

For GEM, the CAT percentiles required to get an interview call from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS, and MDI Gurgaon are

    • ABC and FMS: Both institutes required nothing less than 99.5. Those who get admission at a lesser percentile, usually don’t belong to the GEM category. There are many who don’t even get a call with 99.3. So to stay on the safer side, go for nothing less than 99.5.
    • IIM Indore and Kozhikode: Both the institutes require percentiles around 97.5 for an interview call
    • SPJIMR: This Institute has unique selection criteria under which CAT is given less value and calls are issued on the basis of the candidate's profile. The CAT percentile required in this case is less than the normal if you have a good academic profile along with work experience,
    • MDI: This institute issues calls around the 96% mark.

It’s important to know that these figures are based on trends and not on actual data so you will find exceptions everywhere. Moreover, it’s better you don’t waste time analyzing the CAT cutoff and start preparing for the same.

How are IIM A students different from students of, say, SP Jain, NMIMS, FMS or JB?

Harshita BorahMBA from SVKM's NMIMS (Graduated 2016)

Students at IIM-A are similar to those at SP Jain, NMIMS, FMS, and JBIMS. Aptitude and intelligence are roughly comparable. IIM-A students do not have to compete as hard for placements, so they are less concerned, whereas students from other colleges are constantly concerned about placements.

You'll notice that students from other colleges perform better in competitions than IIM-A because they are generally more hardworking during MBA because the struggle is greater for them. However, because of the brand name, IIM-A students receive far more exposure than students from any other college in India, which benefits students greatly in their personal development.

Are there any people with poor academic record who still got into any IIM, XLRI or FMS? If yes, why not share your stories here?

Shruti MishraStudied at Xaviers Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) - Jamshedpur

Yes, there are many people who converted IIM, XLRI, FMS calls, even with a poor academic record. I personally know someone who scored less than 50 percentile in engineering yet got accepted at XLRI. He performed well in MBA and now works as a senior HR at a major eCommerce company.

Academic record isn’t the only thing that these institute takes into consideration while selecting students. Your entrance examination score, performance in GD-PI, extracurricular achievements, etc. are equally important.

What is the objective of admitting freshers in Ivy B-Schools like IIMs, FMS, JBIMS, SIMSREE, SPJIMR, XLRI, etc.?

Sandeep BiswasGMP International Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (2018)

MBA admission in Indian B Schools is a fairly weird process in comparison to that of foreign B Schools. In India, the admission process requires a candidate to have some work experience and in certain B-schools, it even carries a certain weightage. But during Final Placements, this scenario changes entirely as the recruiters prefer freshers over experienced candidates. The major reasons for this contrast are:

    • The recruiters offering Marketing roles are on the lookout for candidates who can initially go through a sales job for a few years. They believe that the route to Marketing is through sales only. Now Sales requires a lot of traveling that too to rural areas. The recruiters know that these tough job conditions cannot be undertaken by Experienced professionals and thus prefer freshers who they can mold easily.
    • The companies offering Finance roles know that the candidates with prior work experience won’t be working for the long hours they require them to. So they prefer freshers who can work long hours without complaining.

Recruiters are looking for candidates with work experience of not more than 11-12 months. Honestly, this strategy is illogical as a person with more work experience is bound to excel much better than a fresher, and restricting him from getting a job just because they cannot be exploited to the fullest extent is a bit cruel.

The scenario is pretty much the opposite in foreign countries that prefer MBA candidates with work experience only. This is because in India MBA is considered a way to become more employable or earn a fatter cheque. Whereas in the West, it is a means to upgrade your career and take it to new heights. The entire concept of MBA is at fault in India thereby this illogical strategy.

In my opinion, MBA candidates should have a work experience of at least 1 year, only then they can harness the MBA program to the fullest and not approach it just as a source of placements.

Do students from IIM/FMS/JBIMS/SPJIMR/IIFT/XLRI bunk classes like engineering students?

Pragya TripathiCSE IITK'15, IIMA Batch of 2015-17

At IIM/FMS/JBIMS/SPJIMR/IIFT/XLRI, attendance is seen as a crucial aspect of the learning experience. Every effort must be made to be present in class and to participate actively in the discussions. In fact, class participation is considered to be such an important factor in determining grades that a significant portion of the total course weightage is allocated to it. This system is in place to encourage students to be engaged in the learning process and to ensure that they are taking full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them.

On the other hand, at IIT Kanpur, there is a more relaxed approach to attendance. While it is still advisable to attend classes and to be present for lectures, there is no strict requirement in place. This gives students more flexibility and allows them to choose when they want to attend classes based on their personal schedules or other commitments. It also means that engineering students are not penalized if they miss a class or two, as long as they are able to make up for it by participating in other ways, such as completing assignments or preparing for exams.

Overall, both B-schools and Engineering colleges have different approaches to attendance and class participation. While IIM Ahmedabad places a strong emphasis on being present in class and participating actively, IIT Kanpur takes a more relaxed approach. Ultimately, the choice between the two institutions will depend on the individual student's preferences and learning style.

My heart says FMS Delhi. My brain says IIM Calcutta. Where should I go?

    Rohini Mishra
Pragya TripathiWorking at PhonePe (app) (2018–present)

You should make an informed and logical decision rather than being irrational and believing that your heart says something different than your mind.

Getting to FMS vs. IIMC. Both are excellent business schools that have been in operation for many years. However, there is a reason why IIM ABC is mentioned in the same breath as the top three business schools in the country. Every ranking dating back decades has confirmed this. Every Indian is aware of it. FMS, while a good B School, is not compared to IIM ABC because they are superior in every way to any other B School.

When people say that the IIM tag is important, they are correct; however, how much it matters and for which IIMs is a different stories. Even the big four - PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, and E&Y - do not rank IIM ABC and IIM LKI equally. There is a distinct distinction. The rest of the time, you can deduce how much IIM ABC command the tag value over every other IIM. When compared to colleges that are not in the top 15, the tag matters for other IIMs. So, yes, the tag is important, but it is especially important for IIM ABC, which places a high value on the tag. This label is permanent for ABC graduates, but this cannot be said for other IIM graduates.

There are no parallels between IIM Calcutta and FMC Delhi. IIM C is far superior to and ahead of FMS. FMS is simply ranked lower than IIM ABC. You should think about it and make the right decision.

What are the Group Discussion topics for FMS Delhi?

    Girish Singh
    Divjot BaggaGuitarist, Philosopher

Politics and sports are typically not included in GD/PI topics because the panelists cannot assume that all participants are well-versed or even interested in these topics. The panelists prefer delivery over content. Of course, content cannot be completely pointless wishful thinking, but exceptional delivery will always win.

Do not rush into the GD. Most GDs end up being a raging bustle of people interrupting one another and raising their voices to be heard. It is far preferable to remain silent for nearly 70% of the GD time and let the others argue over one topic. When you break in, the others will be taken aback and will silently listen to you. That automatically elevates you to the position of leader and earns you a lot of points.

When asked to sum up, do not include 'your thoughts' or use this as an opportunity to bring up points that were not covered during the discussion. The summary should solely contain the details of the discussion.

Speak slowly and deliberately. You'll be able to express yourself more clearly, and your audience will hang on to every word you say. That automatically elevates you to a position of authority and power - true management potential.

Does FMS have any quota for Delhi University students?

Arshit JainStudied at Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi

The University Grants Commission funds FMS which is a national institute. There are no exceptions for residents of any particular state. According to Delhi University regulations, certain categories are entitled to reservations and exemptions. FMS is an equal opportunity institution for the remaining seats, with no discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, gender, marital status, age, or physical handicap.

To be admitted to FMS, Delhi, candidates must have a bachelor's degree of at least 3 years duration after class 12, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (in the case of SC/ST candidates, only passing marks are required). Candidates from the OBC/PWD and CW categories must have 45% at graduation.

Why are Delhi School of Economics and other better ROI colleges like JBIMS and many more for an MBA not as popular as FMS?

    Debapriya Bhattacharya
Arshit JainStudied at Delhi School of Economics

Here are some of the reasons that should be mentioned:

    • DSE MBA was founded in 1986, whereas FMS was founded in 1954.
    • An older institute has more alumni to leverage for placements and thus more alumni to build credibility in the institute branding.
    • Until 2015, DSE offered a "Master" degree in HR/OD and IB, titled Master of Organization Development and Human Resources and Master of International Business. Two things stand out: i) HR/OD and IB are niche areas to enter in comparison to an MBA-Fin and MBA-Marketing. ii) A MHROD/MIB has lower popularity than an MBA.
    • FMS has significantly more industry exposure than DSE, owing primarily to alumni/family of alumni/friends of alumni.
    • Quality of Faculty: Though both FMS and DSE are run by DU, what DU lacks in academic-focused faculty is more than made up for in FMS, which has regular mandatory industry guest lecturers.
    • The higher cut-off in FMS (relative to DSE) year after year ensures (though is not guaranteed) a certain quality benchmark of students coming in, leading to increased competition and peer learning. Something DSE could think about.
