Vanessa Gemmell Review at Carleton University, Ottawa | Collegedunia

Affordable but Unpleasant Faculty

Least expensive University in the Ottawa area. The only other option is Ottawa University and their tutition is almost a third more expensive. This was the only University I applied to, therefore I did not spend a lot of time or money applying to different schools. I believe that the application price was just over $200.

Course Curriculum :

I have not learned much of what I had wanted to. Once I obtain a position in this field I will definitely need extensive further training and education.

Exams :

To obtain a well paying job, a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in this field is required for most positions. The cutoff for grade averages was also very lenient at this school. The credits are easy to obtain and flexible. I chose to take summer courses as well as an overload of courses during semesters to graduate earlier.

Placement :

There are career services and connections to be made on campus, you just have to know where to look. Lots of opportunities for future endeavors through guest speakers, events, other students, and sometimes professors.

Internship :

Yes, however I have not had much experience engaging with the internships offered. I believe they host internships that are international as well as local. There is a committee or club that focuses on matching students to internships.

Events :

The only events that I can recall are start of the semester events or frosh week events.

Fees :

The tuition is very affordable at Carleton and there are lots of opportunities for bursaries and scholarships. There is often an entrance scholarship for most students and more based on your GPA. I used OSAP and my entrance scholarship to pay for my tuition in addition to prior savings. However, changes to OSAP mean that my most recent tuition left me paying $1200 out of my pocket

Scholarship :

Yes. The scholarship was automatically granted to me and applied to my tuition costs upon my acceptance.

Examination Structure :

The exams are usually 2-3 hours long and often multiple choice in my degree.

Faculty :

The professors are all very standard, most grade fairly and speak clearly. However the other faculty at Carleton are extremely rude and impatient. Nothing is organized and students are spoken to very rudely.

Hostel :

I stayed at home with my parents and commuted to school. It is more financially feasible to do this than to live on your own and pay your own bills. Residence can be quite pricy, but is worth it considering there are tunnels that can take you to and from class without going outside.
