  • The Master of Journalism at the University of California is a 2 years program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • The Master of Journalism degree program consists of narrative writing, audio, photography, broadcast and online video production, multimedia storytelling, data, and investigative-based journalism.
  • By the end of the second year students will have created a portfolio of ambitious, high-quality work, much of it published with the help of the exceptional faculty of seasoned journalists. 
  • During the summer between the first and second years of study, the student will complete 300 hours of supervised journalism.
  • The Master of Journalism (MJ) degree at Berkeley requires the completion of at least 36-semester units of coursework and the submission of a satisfactory master’s project.
  • A minimum of 24 units must be earned from coursework in the Graduate School of Journalism.
  • All students are expected to graduate in 4 consecutive semesters.
  • The classes are small and instructors act as mentors for students.
  • Students get the opportunity to do concurrent degree programs with Law, Asian Studies, International and Area Studies, Latin American Studies, and Public Health.
  • The program’s career services offer a full complement of career planning workshops and opportunities for professional development including resume building, interviewing skills, and branding.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have obtained an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale is required.
  • Students demonstrated an aptitude for writing, and a desire to produce high-quality journalism.
  • The submission of GRE scores is not compulsory for this program.

Work Experience:

  • Students must have a background in journalism and a strong desire to pursue journalism professionally, career changers, and people with several years of professional experience in reporting who are looking to take their journalism career to the next level.
  • The student’s application should reflect their earnest desire, capacity, and aptitude to succeed in a career in journalism.

English Language proficiency:

  • All students from countries or political entities in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency.
  • This applies to students from Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Latin America, the Middle East, the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, most European countries, and Quebec (Canada).

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
