Sociologists use research methodologies and systematic observation to study how the human experience and social interaction are connected to our wider society. They investigate cultural institutions (for example, families, peer groups, and media), social categories (race, socio-economic class, and gender) and social conditions (wealth, poverty, and discrimination) to learn how these forces create, maintain, and transform the individuals and groups that make up our society and vice versa.?
Sociologists also study and facilitate strategies toward positive change in our society. Students are exposed to topics relating to social justice, human rights, and democratic participation. Moreover, students are exposed to forces that threaten these conditions along with theories that critically explain patterns of power, oppression, and privilege.
