Sociology students at NMSU are offered many advantages:
- Undergraduate sociology majors enjoy small class sizes, a diverse multiethnic environment and a low student to professor ratio. Most classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art electronics and the department maintains a computer lab to support student research.
- Students also have the opportunity to work one on one with a professor on a research topic chosen by the student. Other students may choose to include an internship experience in their degree plan. Study abroad is another opportunity that can be enjoyed by students working toward their Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.
- Students begin their Sociology experience by working closely with a faculty advisor to identify career goals. Courses and student activities are then selected to support the career goals. Maximum flexibility is maintained while providing students with a solid foundation of analytical skills and an understanding of social factors that help build effective organizations and better communities.
Please Note
To help ensure graduation on a timely basis, Arts and Sciences students must declare a major by the time they have completed 36 credits. All sophomores and upper-classmen with declared majors are advised by faculty members in the student’s major department. Undeclared sophomores with fewer than 36 credits are advised in the Arts and Sciences Advising Center.
Transfer students with 28 credits or more and a declared major are advised in the department of their major. Others are advised in the college Advising Center, except as noted above. New transfer students are encouraged to visit with Advising Center staff to review the evaluation of their transfer credits and determine how these credits may be used to meet degree requirements.
