Financial analysts held 353,000 jobs in 2012. Many financial analysts work at large financial institutions based in New York City or other major financial centers. About 45 percent of financial analysts worked in the finance and insurance industries, including securities and commodity brokers, banks and credit institutions, and insurance carriers. Others worked throughout private industry and government.
Because of their close relationship to stock exchanges and large banking operations, most of the major investment banks in the United States are based in the New York metropolitan area. Smaller investment banks can be found in many major American cities and some major investment banks have operations in other cities, although most of their business remains in New York.

Most worked in finance and insurance industries, including securities and commodity brokers, banks, insurance carriers, and financial investment firms. About 25 percent of personal financial advisors were self-employed, operating small investment advisory firms.
