The study of philosophy can be both intrinsically interesting and valuable in helping students achieve their personal and vocational goals.

Career Opportunities

Some philosophy majors hope to teach at the college level. But most go on to pursue a variety of other careers. Employers recognize the value of the critical and analytical reasoning skills in which a philosopher is trained. Philosophers are employed in all levels of government, journalism, business and law. Philosophy is also an excellent major for students going on to professional school in law, medicine or theology.

Special Features

The philosophy department is generally recognized as one of the strongest departments at BGSU. Faculty members are recognized in their fields and have developed a number of innovative teaching approaches. Their dedication is the most important element in making the study of philosophy rewarding.

The department offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degree programs that form a lively intellectual environment. According to the “Philosophical Gourmet Report”, the department’s PhD. program in Applied Philosophy is one of the best in the English speaking world in the area of applied ethics. It also ranks highly in the areas of ethical theory and political philosophy. It also hosts an annual workshop series entitled “The Bowling Green Workshops in Applied Ethics and Public Policy” which discusses a different issue each year. The Social Philosophy and Policy Center attracts internationally known scholars who spend a semester or year at BGSU. The Center also sponsors major philosophical conferences on campus.

Each year achievement awards are given to top undergraduates in the department. A Philosophy Club meets periodically for informal philosophical discussions. There is also a regular “Philosophical Movie Night.” The Philosophy Department organizes the BGSU Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl team which participates annually in the nationwide competition.
