- Undergraduate programs are available for those seeking initial licensure in mathematics at the middle and high school levels. These programs reflect current trends and new directions in curriculum and methodology. Professional preparation, including extensive fieldwork, is offered by the School of Education.
- Students are required to complete a major portion of their coursework in mathematics and statistics. Courses in these areas are offered by the College of Arts & Sciences and the School of Education. A portion of these courses includes a dual focus on content and pedagogy, such as Mathematics for Teaching: Geometry.
- Prospective undergraduate students may also apply to the Double Degree Program, a joint program between the School of Education (SED) and the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). This program allows undergraduates to earn two bachelor’s degrees in four years: a BS in Mathematics Education from SED, and a BA in Mathematics from CAS. This program is for highly motivated students who wish to expand their knowledge of mathematics teaching and mathematics content. The work is challenging, but in most cases can be completed in four years through consultation with dedicated faculty advisors. The Double Degree Program is open to freshmen applying for September admission only.
- Specialty programs in the teaching of mathematics are available to undergraduates who are seeking initial licensure as elementary or special education teachers. After completion of the appropriate program, students are qualified to teach mathematics, to act as mathematics resource persons in team-teaching situations, and to organize and manage mathematics resource areas at the elementary level.
