Of course FMST is also interested in content, especially as it moves from one medium to another (like from printed page to radio to film to video game). But even as FMST students examine content, they ask: What are the asserted or assumed possibilities and limits of various media? How have media changed and accrued across time and been institutionalized and conventionalized in different societies and cultures? How are media created, and what differences do the circumstances of creation make?

Film and media are global, cultural phenomena. Every film, photograph, TV program, news report, and advertisement is a product of and statement about the culture in which it was produced. As film and media have come to inform people’s lives the world over, these modes of expression and information have become a significant part of the humanities and social sciences curricula at the College, and the FMST major allows students to make studying media the focus of their liberal arts education.
