Want to have a student perspective about Virginia Tech? Collegedunia reached out to Anshika Tyagi a student of M.Eng in Computer Science at Virginia Tech. Mentioned below are the major points of interest we gathered by interviewing her:

Admission: Anshika secured admission in M.Eng in Computer Science at Virginia Tech with a GRE score of 321 (165 in Quant and 156 in Verbal). Some of the other notable points for admission to Virginia Tech were:

  • Get both, Academic and Professional LOR’s (at least 3). Feedback provided by your professors and manager leaves a big impact on your application.
  • Any publications in the journals can make your application stand out among the pool.

Course CurriculumVirginia Tech provides transition courses for students with different backgrounds from their undergraduate programs. Which makes it easier for students to cope with other students.

  • First semester is all about understanding the course curriculum. It is different from India. Students need to be interactive with the professors. Quizzes are held frequently
  • The curriculum is experiential learning and is activity or project-based (group projects). These projects prepare you for your work life.

University Experience: According to Anshika, the best experience she had at Virginia Tech was, celebrating different festivals of cultures around the world. Diwali was her favorite.

  • The Indian Students Association is a student society that helps students to adjust in a foreign country. ISA forms the largest international community on the Virginia Tech campus, with over 800 active members, students and families included.
  • Students can work in on-campus jobs with hourly rates of $15-16. Most of the students go for jobs in dining sector.
  • Professors are quite approachable and might help you in finding jobs in the department. There are also openings in departments for part-time jobs with around USD 2000/month income potential.

PlacementsYou have to take care of your own internships and apply for them. Colleges host career fairs but students have to apply on their own through job platforms. GPA is not important but a minimum GPA is required.

  • Students must apply for internships in the last semester of their programs. Internships might get converted into full-time jobs.
  • The window for finding a job after graduation is 3 months for international students.

Tips for Indian StudentsResume matters and interview matters. Work on your resume before applying to any university. The average salary of an engineering graduate of Virginia Tech is around USD 82,000

  • The transition phase from India to US can be very stressful. Connecting to Indian Students Association might make you feel like home.
  • Time management is the key to everything. Balancing college life along with part-time jobs may seem impossible, but it is not.

Overview

Virginia Tech is the campus of inventing the future, and the future lies in the potential of the students. I have been accepted early-decision into Virginia Tech and will major in broadcast journalism and plan to minor in psychology with a long-term goal of being a reporter. One of the main reasons why I fell in love with Virginia Tech is because of the school's motto, 'That I may serve. Throughout my high school career, I have inspired others to get their stories heard through journalism as well as inspire others to give back to the community. Virginia Tech is the perfect school to continue these passions both on campus, and into the future. Virginia Tech is expanding its communication studies major at just the right time for me to take advantage of all there is to offer. From state-of-the-art equipment to the best connections possible, a multimedia journalism major is very versatile and I believe that Virginia Tech is one of the best places I could ever gain these skills from. The 'Hokies-Hiring-Hokies' program makes me confident that I will have the resources provided to me to be successful even after graduation. Being able to communicate with people is a crucial part of being a journalist. Virginia Tech is the perfect campus for me and I am beyond excited because they provide plentiful opportunities to get involved through leadership in the field of journalism to create positive change. I will use the experiences I have gained throughout my high school career to step up and continue to make a difference on campus and in the future. I am confident that I will leave Virginia Tech as a stronger student with all of the resources I need to excel as a reporter in the field of multimedia journalism.

Fees

It costs about $27,000 to attend for one year. I got scholarships and grants from the school, but I probably will not get as many this upcoming year. My school is quite stingy on the amount of financial aid it awards to students.

Overview

It's an amazing job outlook. It is very perfect for friend making. It has an amazing football team. The parties were good. The campus life is good. You never feel alone and people will always be around if you need anyone.

Fees

There are a lot of fees. Housing, food, activity fees, tuition, staff. There's a lot to think about when going to this college but I think all the fees are worth it. Oh, I also forgot books.
