The mathematics major at Marist offers a solid grounding in the ideas and techniques of mathematics. During the junior and senior year, the student can use the upperlevel elective mathematics courses to tailor the major to career goals. Applied Statistics, Operations Research, and Numerical Analysis emphasize the ideas and methods used in business and industry. Abstract Algebra II, Differential Equations, and Complex Variables emphasize the conceptual understanding of mathematics and the techniques useful in the sciences.
?In partnership with the Department of Teacher Education in the School of Social & Behavioral Sciences, the Department of Mathematics has established a mathematics major curriculum that leads to provisional New York State certification in Adolescence Education with a specialization in Mathematics. This curriculum, approved by the New York State Education Department, includes courses in mathematics, as well as courses designed to prepare students for a secondary school teaching career. A supervised student teaching experience, arranged by the Department of Teacher Education, is included.
The Department of Mathematics at Marist provides mathematics majors with a solid grounding in the ideas and techniques of mathematics. By taking appropriate coursework both within and outside the department, the mathematics major may graduate with a provisional certificate to teach mathematics at the secondary education level in New York State. Full certification requires a MA, which most teachers finish during the first five years of employment.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school or secondary school and other universities attended
- Submitting SAT/ACT score is optional for the students
- Applicants should have completed the following courses: 4 years of English; 3 years of Science; 3 years of Maths; 3 years of History/Social Science; 2 years of foreign language
- Submit one counselor letter of recommendation and teacher letter of recommendation is optional
- Submit a personal essay about yourself and your goals
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 550 in PBT; 213 in CBT; 80 in IBT
- IELTS: minimum 6.5
- Duolingo: minimum 115
