IIT Bhilai PhD Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the IIT Bhilai PhD course in engineering, the student needs to fulfill one of the following criteria in relevant subject areas-

  • The candidate must possess a bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or equivalent for the general category and 55% marks for SC/ ST.
  • The candidate must possess a Master's degree in Engineering/ Technology with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or equivalent for the general category and 55% marks for SC/ ST candidates.
  • The candidate must have a Master's degree in Science, Arts, or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or equivalent for the general category and 55% marks for SC/ ST students
  • The student candidate must also fulfill one of these additional requirements as stated below-
    • He/ she must possess a valid NET or GATE score
    • Applicant must possess a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of DBT/ ICAR/ CSIR/ UGC/ NBHM/ ICMR/ ICPR/ DST/ SERB or DST INSPIRE Fellowship
    • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience either while acquiring a Master's degree in Engineering/ Technology or after obtaining the qualifying degree
    • A CGPA or CPI of 8.00 or more in B.tech which shall be completed from IIT itself

    • For a student candidate seeking PhD admission into the chemistry discipline, CSIR-UGC NET (JRF/ LS) in Chemical Sciences is required or GATE scores in CY could be used for the selection procedure.

IIT Bhilai PhD Course Details

Each student registered for the IIT Bhilai PhD program shall go through various academic stages of the program which shall include the following. 

  • Coursework, which shall be evaluated as per the course evaluation guidelines of the Institute. Candidacy examination, which shall be carried out as per the academic calendar and shall be evaluated as per the guidelines of the Institute.
  • Research seminars, one in each semester of the program after clearing the candidacy examination. The seminars shall be evaluated by a departmental committee formed by the DPGC and shall be graded as per the guidelines of the Institute. Thesis submission and evaluation, which shall be carried out after the candidate submits the research thesis as per the prescribed procedure of the Institute by a duly formed committee of thesis examiners.
  • Thesis Defense, which shall be carried out after the thesis evaluation. The thesis evaluation committee shall make its recommendation on the acceptance of the thesis to the academic senate via IPGC and DPGC.
  • Students are expected to complete their programs within the nominal duration. A first-year undergraduate student who could not clear at least 60% of the credits registered for will be required to repeat the entire first year irrespective of the reasons thereupon.
  • The program of a PhD student who accumulates 24 or more thesis credits with an F grade shall be terminated.
  • The program of a PhD student who fails to clear a minimum of 24 credits out of the first 48 credits registered shall be terminated.

IIT Bhilai PhD Stipend

IIT Bhilai offers stipends to students who are residents of the campus for that semester. The institute pays a fellowship for 3 years and continues for another year with a recommendation from the department. Students who are not residents of the campus are not paid the fellowship. IIT Bhilai offers a stipend/ fellowship to students who devote 8 hours per week in academic and administrative work (other than the research and coursework) assigned to them.
