The permanent campus of IIT Jodhpur is spread across 872 acres. Life over here is pretty good. The senior-junior interaction is good and the peers are more like family members. Jodhpur does not offer much in terms of entertainment, however, we enjoy our campus life and try to make the most of it.
There are two main fests, Varchas- the sports fest, and Ignus-the techno-cult-socio fest. Both these fests are conducted at a much greater level than other new IITs. Other than these two, there is the intra college fest- Spandan, the unplugged night, and Intra college technical fest-Nimble. Other than these, a lot more fun activities keep happening on campus.
IIT Jodhpur is a small IIT, therefore, students from across streams get to actively participate in the clubs and fests. You will easily get PoRs here. The five societies at IIT Jodhpur include Arts and Design, Cultural, Sports, Technical, and Academic Research and Development.
The girls' hostel has a curfew set at 12 AM - 5 AM. Girls and boys are not allowed in each other’s hostel common area as of now. Both genders get equal opportunities in every respect and the faculty at IIT Jodhpur is learned and supportive.
Overall, life is quite great at IIT J and I am quite happy to be a part of it.
I would like to compare the top NITs with new IITs like IIT Jodhpur on several parameters, first talking about the placements as that is your biggest concern. By new IITs here I mean IIT Jodhpur and its contemporary IITs.
I would say that unlike in the past, today both old NITs and new IITs are at par. You should consider all the above factors and also your locational preference before arriving at a decision. One of my seniors told me that new IITs are growing tremendously and will soon outperform the top NITs at this rate.
Hostels at IIT Jodhpur are decked with all basic amenities and students are assigned single occupancy rooms which makes the hostel life better. Here is what a hostel room at IIT Jodhpur looks like
Here are a few key highlights related to IIT Jodhpur hostel facilities
In all, IIT Jodhpur hostels are decked with world-class facilities and make the students stay very comfortable.
I am assuming that you have no specific branch preferences and are just confused between the institutes. In that case, the factors affecting your decision are campus life, facilities, infrastructure, and placements. Consider the table below

Considering everything, IIT Jodhpur is definitely better than NIT Kurukshetra. You will get associated with the much coveted IIT tag and also will have a diverse peer pool. The institute attracts the best crowd and you will be surrounded by some of the finest minds of the country.
The intense competition will challenge your inner self and you will become the best version of yourself. The campus life here is very vibrant and the facilities are great too.
IIT Jodhpur CSE is the highest-placed branch for both BTech and MTech programs. One of my close friends completed her BTech in CSE recently and got placed with a decent package. On having a conversation with her and other friends who have completed the same course from other IITs, I arrived at a conclusion. While the CSE placements of almost every IIT are great, what sets IIT Jodhpur apart is the job satisfaction it offers.
Usually, CS students receive high packages but end up leaving their job later because their job does not satisfy them. IIT Jodhpur has a different scenario, the packages offered are lower than other institutes but the job satisfaction is higher. Most students end up with jobs they love and even find their batch mates and seniors in the same company thus increasing job satisfaction.

IIT Jodhpur CSE Department has huge ties with industry and academia and has numerous ongoing projects. It also has collaborations with industry leaders like Microsoft, IBM, Intel, Morgan Stanley, DIRECTI, DeShaw, and Google for academics and research collaboration.
No, for every bachelor's course offered at IIT Jodhpur, you have to clear JEE Exam and get a rank that qualifies you for admission. Some IITs accept Bachelors admission with JEE Rank but not for engineering courses. For instance, IIT Madras offers a Bachelor's program in the Humanities department for which you only need to clear HSEE.
Here are the programs offered by IIT Jodhpur and the exams accepted respectively
BTech |
JEE Main |
MBA |
CAT |
M. Tech and Integrated M.Tech+Ph.D. |
GATE |
M.Sc. and M.Sc. + M.Tech. |
IIT JAM |
Ph.D. |
GATE, UGC-NET, JRF, or SLET |
However, every engineering course requires JEE rank for admission irrespective of any IIT.
Honestly, IIT Jodhpur has very few gem professors. My sister who studies there mentioned 2 of her favorite professors and why she considered them a gem
Shanmuganathan Raman: He deserves all the love and respect he gets from his students because of the kind of teacher he is.
Kiran Kumar Hiremath: As a whole, he is somewhat like Raman sir only.
Additionally, she also mentioned Vivek Vijay sir who is a mentor to many students.
Every coin has 2 sides and likewise, every college has its strengths and weaknesses. IIT Jodhpur no doubt is a great institute offering excellent placement opportunities, startup encouragement, the IIT tag, and high-quality education but it has its own sets of demerits that affect its overall reputation. Here are a few of them
Individually these demerits are not very major, but as a whole, these affect the overall learning experience to a great extent.
I think the major problem that IIT Jodhpur faces is its locational disadvantages. It lacks facilities like flight connectivity with other metros and this directly affects the number and quality of MNCs that visit during placements.
Another problem that IIT Jodhpur students face is the long distance between hostels and college as they have to spend a lot of money traveling between campus and hostels. IIT Jodhpur also lacks in terms of academia and industrial ties again because of its poor location. However, the Mechanical engineering department has started several industry immersion programs so exposure is not an issue for them.
I can never stop emphasizing this, no matter how many options you have always go for the one that gives you the IIT tag.
I am not saying Engineering colleges like NSIT and DTU aren’t good but they are in the developing phase while IIT Jodhpur is in its developing phase. This means it will only get better. Despite being a new IIT, its average package this year was recorded at INR 21.30 LPA, which is a great feat for a new college.
Additionally, IITs receive more funding from the government to provide better research and project opportunities. Specifically speaking about CSE, this year the highest INR 56 LPA was bagged by BTech CSE. The placement percentage stood at 97% while the average package for CSE was recorded at INR 23 LPA.
DTU and NSIT may have higher placement statistics but they lack what IIT Jodhpur offers, the most coveted IIT tag! So choose wisely.
