The campus of NIT Durgapur occupies 187 acres of land. It is co-educational and entirely residential. NIT Durgapur is located around 160 kilometres (km) northwest of Kolkata, facing National Highway No. 2, on the main railway line between Howrah and Delhi. Currently, there are roughly 2500 boys and 500 girls living in seven hostels for males and two for girls. There are more than 1000 undergraduate students enrolled each year.
