Madurai Kamaraj University M.A. English Program Structure Details

• Duration: All aspirants must complete the program within two years. The program is dedicated to maintaining the entire year-long program, including four semesters. Each course contains a structurally detailed syllabus for the unit.
• Methods of Evaluation: Students will be assessed by two high quality assessment methods. One is Continuous Internal evaluation and the other is End-of-semester evaluation.
• Continuous Internal Evaluation: Internal assessment should be done by the concerned faculty member to determine the values, skills and knowledge deprived by the students. Evaluation results may be published either by pre-determined marks. The results of the internal evaluation will be announced or displayed on the notice board or the website. There may be three different methods of continuous internal evaluation:

1. Book Review (BKR).
2. Preparing Bibliography (BIB).
3. Writing Assignment (WRA).

• End-of-semester Evaluation: This will be completed at the end of the first semester and will assess the skills and knowledge acquired by students through class-room interaction. The evaluation process should be verifiable and transparent. Internal faculties may engage themselves with external examinees in the written examination process. In case of a written test, the format of the question paper can be corrected by the examination committee by attaching it in the attachment.
• Attendance Requirement: Students must achieve 75% attendance in each course to take the exam. Students who have achieved 74% to 70% attendance will have to apply for condonation in the prescribed form along with the prescribed fee. Students achieving 69% to 60% attendance must apply for condonation in the prescribed form along with the prescribed fee along with the medical certificate.
• Elective Courses: Students can be employed in compulsory basic and elective courses in four semesters. The elective course papers are - Practical English grammar (first semester), Literature and Psychology (Second semester), English for competitive exams (Third semester).
• Program Structure: M.A. English, this program is designed as a core and elective course paper for each semester. There may be three main papers and one variant paper.
• Integration of Continuous and End-of-semester evaluation: The relational weight assigned for the internal evaluation and external evaluation is 25 percent and 75 percent respectively. After integration of internal and external assessments, the results can be expressed in marks.
