What are the cons of studying in VSSUT, Burla?

Sabeer Chalana
Sabeer Chalana

Like every other college, VSSUT Burla has its own set of cons some of which have been mentioned below

  1. Despite having the best amenities among government colleges, it’s quite lacking as compared to a private college.
  2. Being located in the small town of Burla, students of VSSUT have no access to city life. However, it may not be a con necessarily for nature lovers considering the beautiful ambiance and forest-covered hills
  3. The pool club is in the backyard of the hostels.
  4. VASUT has a very outdated curriculum but so do most IITs.
  5. The administration is very slow and unresponsive.
  6. The library of the institute does not have a good ambiance conducive to studying.

Hope you get a fair idea of the cons at VSSUT, Burla.

Which is the best branch in VSSUT, Burla, Odisha?

Sapna Malik updated
Sapna Malik updated

VSSUT is a great place for UG studies. But a degree from this college isn’t sufficient in most cases. So it is usually better to opt for higher studies at a prestigious college.

  1. For an M.Tech or MS, CS/IT are the best branches. This is because they offer endless opportunities in research and jobs.
  2. For an MBA, Production Engineering is the right branch. Its curriculum contains elements of Management Studies. Also, scoring high grades is comparatively easier.
  3. For UPSC, Economics, Law, etc, any branch is equally suitable.
  4. To grab high paying jobs, Mechanical and Production are the best. But there is a fierce competition as core companies hire just 2-3 students each year.
  5. For a CS/IT student who participates in Competitive Programming, goes for ACM ICPC, and maintains good grades, getting off campus placements in Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc. isn’t very difficult. A forum has been set up for competitive programming where the seniors provide good guidance on problem solving.

Make sure to go for a branch that interests you. This does play a huge role in deciding your career prospects.

  • Academics: The faculties are highly qualified and experienced and are always eager to provide any kind of help to the students.
  • Placement: During the 2022 placement drive, 773 students received 750 job offers. The company that offered the maximum job offers was GenC followed by Wipro (75) and Infosys (60). The highest package was recorded at INR 17.34 LPA while the VSSUT Burla average package stood at INR 6.05 LPA.

What's the best way to score an above 8 CGPA in VSSUT?

Tezal Dahiya

Here are some tips to score an 8+ CGPA during your B.Tech at VSSUT-

  1. Do not rely on teachers. Self study is the only thing that’ll save you.
  2. For last minute studies or to understand a topic, follow books by local publishers (like B.K. or Alok publication). This is especially helpful for the subjects that you find difficult.
  3. Follow NPTEL videos for learning important concepts. These videos aren’t made for last minute studies, so watch them during regular days.
  4. Solve all assignment questions yourself. During exams, especially midsems, most questions are based on these very assignments.
  5. Try to score very high in midsems as they are much easier than the endsems. Midsems can increase your final marks by a lot.
  6. To get 9+ CGPA, make sure to score at least 15+ in all subjects, in your mid sems. Also, start studying at least two weeks before the end sems.
  7. In your final results, if you get an O grade in two subjects, and a C in none, you’ll surely get a 9 CGPA.

Maintain a good CGPA because it is very important for placements and higher studies (MBA, M.Tech, etc). Only the top 20 students from each branch are deemed eligible for the written test of L&T. To be one of those students, you’ll have to get 8.8+ CGPA in your B.Tech.

Is VSSUT a tier 1 university?

Sapna Malik updated
Sabeer Chalana

No, VSSUT is not a tier 1 university and neither are IITs and NITs. One needs to understand the fact that the Tier-1 and Tier-2 system is relevant in the US and not in India. It is a classification based on internationally competitive research outcomes of a university. Indian universities don’t come under this category yet. In India, tier-1 means a college with excellent placements. In reality, very few of our universities fare well when their research outcome is considered. Also, India does not have any specific body to provide ranking based on international competitive research outcomes. The NIRF ranks colleges generally.

One also needs to consider the fact that India is a developing country with limited resources. The budget for research is less compared to foreign universities.

It can thereby be concluded that VSSUT University is not a tier-1 university but it is one of the best institutions in Odisha.

Is it good to take the ETC branch in VSSUT? How good are the placements in ETC in VSSUT?

Sayantani Barman
Tezal Dahiya

Electronics, although a vast branch has limited scope in colleges like VSSUT. So, I would not recommend you to take ETC in VSSUT.

You will face many problems, especially in practicals. The lab equipment is outdated hindering the practicals. Most students copy from each other and rarely do students solve a practical question on their own. The professors are also underqualified so your only saviors here are the toppers or the geeks.

The grading is pathetic and some professors don’t give marks unless they know you personally. Students are required to wear formal and clean shaved faces for the next 4 years, unlike the students of other branches.

The lab records will be disapproved and you will have to write it again and again. The students of this branch get back in their exams frequently. The fault is in the faculty members and yet no action is taken against them.

Although I recommend you not to join this branch, you can consider talking to the seniors once before making the final decision.
