NIT Delhi PhD Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in the appropriate branch under the departments of Engineering/Science/Humanities and Social Sciences/Management Studies/Architecture with a minimum score of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA.
- Or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Management Studies/Architecture under the appropriate branch with the minimum score of 80% or 8.5 CGPA, 75% or 8.0 CGPA, 80% or 8.5 CGPA respectively.
- For Sponsored Candidates, a minimum of two-year experience is required along with the qualification in National Eligibility Test; UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE examination. He/ she is also required to submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their particular employer/organization.
- There is a relaxation provided for various categories in the cutoff marks as according to the reservation policy of Government of India. NIT Delhi Courses Offered
NIT Delhi PhD. Selection Criteria
Candidates for the PhD program have to undergo through 2 stages:
- Stage-1: Entrance Test/written Test
The online screening test in the relevant discipline. The syllabi for the test will be as per GATE/NET examination in the respective subjects. The test shall be of 90 minutes duration for 60 marks consisting of multiple choice questions in the relevant discipline. The minimum qualifying marks for appearing in Stage-II will be 50% in the screening test.
- Stage-2: Interview
The Screening committee will check the eligibility criteria of the candidates. Students might be asked to make a presentation on their chosen research area.The presentation should be brief and clear (around 5-10 minutes) highlighting the basic idea of proposed research.
NIT Delhi PhD Course Details
- The institute follows the credit system to award PhD degrees. By the end of the program, a candidate must acquire a minimum of 14 credits to successfully complete the program.
- It is mandatory to take the theory course on research methodology. A seminar is conducted both in the first and second semester.
- Research scholars have the option to opt for the course studies at M.Tech level. Students who have completed their UG/PG at NIT Delhi are not to take up the research course already studied by them.
- Every external/ internal research scholar (Full Time/ Part time) admitted under Ph.D. Programme is required to pass the course work approved by RAC & DPGC within the first two semesters only. For credit requirements see table given below in 8.2 for details.
- Thesis can be submitted within six months from the date of notification of approval of pre-Ph.D. synopsis by DPGC.
- At least one supervisor of the research scholar shall be from NIT Delhi. A Faculty Member/ Officer/ Scientist of NIT Delhi with Ph.D. degree can act as supervisor.

Ques. Are applications for PhD programmes not accepted online?
Ans. No, the application procedure is made through offline mode only. The form can be downloaded from the website and is to be submitted at the DGPC convener.
Ques. When does NIT Delhi invite the applications for PhD program?
Ans. NIT Delhi offers admissions for the Ph.D. programme twice in a year. Aspirants are advised to check the notice for the PhD admission during December and July month.
Ques. How much score is required to clear the coursework at NIT Delhi?
Ans. NIT Delhi research scholars have to secure a minimum of 7.5 CGPA to clear the coursework. Students getting a lower CGPA than this, are allowed to appear only once in a specially conducted end semester examination.
Ques. When can a scholar finish the PhD program at NIT Delhi?
Ans. The duration of the entire PhD curriculum is generally four years which can be extended to a maximum of two years and is later converted to part-time if the thesis is not submitted within the time frame
Ques. Can a PhD scholar apply for the assistantship at NIT Delhi?
Ans. Yes, all students admitted to the PhD programme are eligible for applying to institute teaching assistantships.
