Most students, freshly out of school, try to choose an Engineering branch for themselves. You might be someone who has a deep passion for either Mechanical or CSE. In that case, I would advise you to follow your heart. 

But if you think not opting for CSE is a bad decision, just ask yourself why you would consider CSE. Is it because you did some coding in your school days and wish to enter into that field, or simply because CSE is popular. Also, NIT Silchar offers a branch change after the 2nd semester. This is based on your performance in the first two semesters. In case you feel dissatisfied with your choice, you can opt for branch change as well. 

For your first year (whichever branch you choose) maintain good grades, talk to your seniors and explore your stream. 

Both NIT Silchar as well as IIIT Jabalpur are backed by the Government of India and have similar facilities. The campus, faculty, and alumni network are great in both cases. Overall, if you are passionate about academics and research, then go for IIIT Jabalpur but if you want a more vibrant college life choose NIT Silchar.

Research – CSE has an active and advanced research environment at TEZU.

Other than the qualities of the institute, your initial preference should be given to your interest in the core subject.

The record of placement statistics at NIT Silchar and IITDM Kancheepuram has been relatively the same in recent years. The core recruiters who are working on AR and VR grab students from the CSE department, especially those who are skilled in coding. IITDM Kacheepuram has an added advantage for the students as they offer design courses other than core courses, which is beneficial during the interview session. IITDM is also leading in offering efficient classes, experienced faculties, good infrastructure, and hostel facilities to the students.

 The final decision should be made based only on your interests.

My sister is an alumnus of NIT Arunachal Pradesh and has also visited NIT Silchar several times. As per her experience, the preference order to follow while making a choice between these institutes should be 

• NIT Silchar > NIT Arunachal Pradesh>PEC

The reason I placed NIT Silchar first is because it has better rankings, and even the connectivity issues have been resolved. One can now reach Silchar by road, train and via air. This has improved the placement scenario to a great extent.
