Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) : Some facts you can't avail in website, but you should know if you are thinking of getting admission in it !!

Remarks :

Eligibility of the course - The candidate must have passed the higher secondary exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English with a minimum of 50% marks for general candidates and 40% for the reserved category candidates. Anyone can find the application form, application fees, and application dates on BCKV University's official website. Reservation benefits - An additional 20 seats in B.Sc (agriculture or Horticulture) courses are offered on the basis of marks obtained in the ICAR AIEEA exam. Other details one can easily avail in the admission bulletin published on the official website of BCKV.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I fulfilled the eligibility criteria and desired to study agriculture since my childhood days. In our agriculture faculty, there are 100 students in one semester. There are two exams in each 6 months - Mid-term and End-term exams. There are 10-12 courses in each semester. Besides these two written exams, there are practicals, viva, assignments, lab projects, field visits, projects, and PowerPoint presentations for each course in each semester. One can easily understand how tough to go through all these sessions. For example - imagine one 6 monthly schedule - 3 months for class to complete your syllabus, another three months for monotonous exams one after another ready to choke your throat. Morning field visits on winter days. I guess now you can imagine the scenario.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

Semester fee - 6775. Hostel fee (mess bill/month) - around 2500 (based on each month's expenditure and audit accordingly). Cost to study (per year) = (6775×2) + (2500×12) = 43550. No scholarship, financial assistance, or job I got on campus.

Campus Life :

There are one/two freshers' parties, farewell as well, and a social festival for 2-3 years in BCKV. Other than these, Agrifest (All India cultural program competition among agriculture universities), faculty picnic, hostel tour, year tour, hostel picnic, year picnic, Intra-hostel cricket league, football league, and badminton tournament are also there. In which month they will be conducted is variable, it is being decided among the students based on their availability. BCKV owns another thing to take pride in - one central library, one of the largest libraries in Asia. Classrooms are very airy, avail the facility of air conditioner, with power point projector, digital learning facility with audio-visual aids. There is one active student unit run by students, they act as the mediator between student demands and administration authorities.

Hostel Facilities :

4 students in one room, in each bed. Two ceiling fans, 3 tube lights, and 9 cupboards in each room. Surrounding are very neat and clean, full of greenery and earthly aesthetics. The meal is quite good, 2 times meal a day, canteen facility is available in hostel premises as well as inside campus. All details for hostel registration will be provided during the physical counseling process. Hostel faculty is available for all students.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I am pursuing a Bsc. Agriculture as I came to know about the job opportunities associated with it. Faculty: The student ratio is poor because of a lack of recruitment in this sector for a long time. Quality of teaching is average because there are a limited number of teachers who could inculcate our interest in this subject through their good teaching methods. Others were just presenting slides and reading out the lines written on them. Random announcement of exams was frequent with only 40 percent syllabus completed in 3 months and 60 percent syllabus completed only 10 days before the exam. Moreover, there were midterm, endterm, and viva throughout 1 month and it was very hectic due to continuous 33 exam papers conducted at a time.

Course Curriculum Overview:

India is an agriculture-dependent country where more than 70% of the people are involved in agriculture and allied sectors, there is a huge scope for improvement and modernization. The faculty and profs are very helpful, no extra tuition is needed, library is available. Exams are not that punctual but moderately easy to pass.

From the 7th semester, students become eligible for the campus Placements. Various Seed Companies Fertilizers companies and many other private companies are visited and various offers are made. The highest Package was 720000 per annum and the average package was 480000 per annum. About 30 to 40 percent of students are getting placements.
