Biotechnology is rooted in Biology, not Mathematics or Analytics. If you are even remotely interested in Biology, you’ll easily understand the courses. Else, you’ll struggle in this branch. Biotech has a lot of opportunities in research.
IIT Madras Biotech will give you some industry exposure too. You’ll get equal opportunities as other branch students for non core sectors (finance, economics, consulting, analytics, management, coding, etc.). But the opportunities are very limited for core jobs.
IIT Madras Biotechnology will be a good option if you are interested in Biology. If you want to go for higher studies or research, you will get good exposure at IIT Madras. It is a brach with huge research scope. Opportunities abroad are excellent for Biotechnology, ivy league universities offer great courses in Biotechnology and related fields.
Compared to other core branches at the institute, the placement opportunities are limited. Core placements are very few in number. But there are good opportunities in the non-tech sector. Biocon is one of the very few core biotech companies that recruit through the IIT Madras placement drive. The placement average for the branch is around 60%. The salary packages offered range from INR 8 - 21 LPA.
It depends on what you are looking for. For example, if you are seeking a JEE-type experience then this is not a good place for you.
There is not much involvement of mathematical or analytical skills and if you are not that into Biology, you are likely to have a hard time doing this course.
On the other hand, if you like biology, you will love this field. There are a lot of research opportunities. There is a lot of exposure towards various industrial activities too. When it comes to placements, there are not many options if you want to stay in the same field. However, if you widen your domain and go for non-core jobs, then there are innumerable options. For a non-core placement, you are considered as good as any other branch’s student.
