Ashish Kumar Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2019)

One of my friends was interested in this field and decided to take Biotech at NIT Rourkela. She claims it to be the best decision of her life. The program was more inclined toward biomed than biotech. Here are a few highlights of the course

  • The program is delivered by some well-experienced and qualified faculty. They are beneficial and adopt modern pedagogy to ensure a better understanding of concepts.
  • NIT Rourkela has a great culture, reputation, and alumni network.
  • Most alumni of the Biotechnology branch of NIT Rourkela are pursuing careers abroad while a few have opted for CS careers.

Overall, Biotechnology is a multifaceted branch that has a great research scope outside India. However, The Indian market has yet to increase its demand for bioengineers. It’s advisable to choose the right sub-field and have the right skill set.

Prioritize your future aspects followed by your interests while making the decision.

What are the placement statistics of biotechnology at IIT Guwahati?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : May 4th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

My knowledge is limited to IIT Guwahati placements 2019-20 Biotechnology as my brother was a part of the same batch. Out of the total 48 students, 37 opted for placements, and 25 were placed. Earlier the placement percentage was 67.6% and now it has risen to 75%. Students got placed in Analytics, SDE, and Graduate Trainee profiles. Those who opted out of placements went for higher studies in core concepts.

I asked another friend about the placement scenario of Biotechnology at IIT Guwahati. She told me that it’s difficult to get employed after graduation. You can grab a good salary package after completing a master's. Internships were also offered in biotech companies or pharma companies. Students were eligible for placements after the 5th semester. A Few students were also selected by Deloitte.

Why is biotechnology considered the worst branch in NIT Durgapur?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : September 8th, 2023

Here are some reasons why Biotechnology from NIT Durgapur isn’t a good choice-

  1. Like most Indian colleges, Biotechnology doesn’t receive ample attention from NIT Dgp administration. The department is underfunded, and understaffed, there isn’t proper space and the atmosphere is not ambient.
  2. The majority of Biotech teachers at NIT DGP aren’t good. They expect you to know and remember everything. Students with good pointers are treated fairly, while others become bad students without committing any mistakes.
  3. The academic section and placement cell have no proper communication in-between them. Students from Biotech don’t have proper interaction with other departments. No one wishes to bridge these gaps.
  4. When applying for foreign universities, you will be brainwashed on how you should intern at an Indian college.
  5. No core company visits the campus during the placement season. The only option left is mass recruiters. Many companies restrict only Biotech students from applying for a placement. Placement season is quite frustrating for Biotech students of NIT Durgapur.

Due to these reasons, pursuing a Biotech from NIT Durgapur might not be the right choice.

How is biotechnology at Amity University Noida? How are the placements?

NG
Neha Ghosh Posted On : February 23rd, 2021
B.Sc in Biotechnology, Amity University, Noida (2018)

One of my friends suggested that Btech in biotechnology is much better than Bsc in Biotechnology at Amity University Noida Campus. It is one of the best branches in the area. The campus is really good, you will get a lot of labs to work on.

The faculties and professors are highly qualified and friendly as well. It totally depends on you as in how much you can take and learn from this college campus. If you are a bright student then you will gain a lot of knowledge and may get placed in good company while if you are an average student then you will have to work really hard to get the best opportunity. Although the faculties are very good you will get a lot of help from them.

Now coming to the placement part it has been suggested by my friend that Btech get good placements in comparison to Bsc students. The reason being they place Bsc students in some BPO companies while Btech students get better opportunities. But the placements are not 100% core placements. This means that you might also get placed in sales and marketing jobs as well depending upon your candidature. The college conducts campus placements for few IT companies only. It depends upon your capability and how you grab the opportunity fast.

For those who don’t get placements should always try for better internships. You can also start preparing for exams like GRE and GATE for further studies and trying for good companies. As a proactive student you should always try for various options as if you wait for 4 years and at the end you don’t get placed then you might be disappointed. You can also go for Msc in Biotechnology after completing Bsc in order to get good placements.

I got NIT Rourkela for biotechnology and VSSUT for electrical. Which is the best in the sense of placement records?

SV
Sudeeksha Verma Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

Both NIT Rourkela and VSSUT are at the same level in terms of placements. BioTech students from NIT Rourkela and Electrical students from VSSUT get placed in software firms like TCS/IBM. Therefore, I recommend you look beyond placements and adopt a broader perspective. Identify where your interests and passions lie and approach that path rather than running after placements.

The field of Biotechnology is growing at a fast pace with cutting-edge research taking place. Many of NIT Rourkela Biotechnology alumni are today advancing into successful careers or research paths. Some examples are

  • An alumnus is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford.
  • Another alumnus is pursuing her master's at the University of California at Berkeley.
  • A senior is currently pursuing Ph.D. at the national university of Taiwan.

The best part of Biotechnology at NIT Rourkela is the limited number of students which increases your chances of performing well in competitive exams like GATE increases.

Overall, being a part of a well-reputed institute like NIT Rourkela will offer great exposure both academically and personally. As an Electrical student at VSSUT, you will most probably be getting into a boring job at PSU. Moreover, Burla has a deteriorating infrastructure and poor campus facilities. So go for NIT Rourkela!

Which is better for biotechnology: IIT Guwahati or IIT Roorkee?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

In my opinion, IIT Roorkee is a better option for Engineering in Biotechnology. This department was established in 2002 and is a subdomain of Chemical Engineering. Over the past few years, it has grown by leaps and bounds in every aspect. It has excellent connections with good pharma companies. IDPL, Rishikesh is very close to Roorkee. Additionally, Delhi and the NCR cities like Gurgaon, Noida, and Faridabad which are home to many pharma companies are in close proximity to the Institute. The placement scenario of Biotechnology at IIT Roorkee has been decent till now. The faculty is very approachable and helps you secure internships.

How good are the placements in Anna University for M.Tech students in biotechnology?

SG
Sanjay Gupta Posted On : December 19th, 2022
M. TECH from Anna University, Tamil Nadu, India

The placement opportunities for M.Tech students in biotechnology at Anna University are very rare. My friend is a student of Anna University currently pursuing M. tech in biotechnology. She told me that the reality is different once you get into college. No doubt the teachers and curriculum are top notch, but the sole focus throughout the entire first year is studies. There are no practicals at all. Rather it looks like studying the core subjects of B.Tech with higher level education.

The second year has both minor and major projects. Once you are done with the projects you have to do the job seeking alone. There are no placements. Sometimes your mentor can offer you a decent package that will give you sufficient industrial exposure. After this you can apply for high-paying jobs also.

How is biotech at IIT Roorkee?

SM
Soumyadeep Mahapata Posted On : April 15th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

Biotechnology is a research-oriented branch with great scope in the same. The core job prospects within India are scarce but in abundance outside India. This is because of the high demand for this branch outside India.

This branch is expected to grow in the near future in India too, but as of now most Biotechnology students only prefer foreign countries mainly US or Europe for research and jobs.

Non-core job opportunities are unlimited spreading across various fields like Coding, Software jobs, Data analysis, Data Scientist, and UPSC among many others. Keeping in mind the usual trend, most IIT Roorkee students belonging to the Biotechnology branch opted for Non-core placements and only a handful continued their interest in research work.

It all boils down to your performance throughout the 4 years and your personal preferences. Be it core or non-core, IIT Roorkee has opportunities for everyone.
