MHRD takes into account a few parameters while ranking institutes. In the MHRD ranking, VIT Vellore outranked IIT BHU due to more research papers in Scopus-indexed journals.

Most of the faculty members in VIT Vellore have their Ph.D. degrees. The majority of the professors are actively engaged in research and publish research articles regularly in reputed journals.

The MHRD collects various data from the colleges and ranks a college by considering different factors. One such factor is the data on the number of research papers published and the researches going on in a college.

The MHRD had ranked VIT Vellore above IIT BHU as there was more number of research articles published by VIT Vellore, according to the data recorded by the MHRD. The previous director of IIT BHU explained the situation in a press conference. He said there was some error in the collection of data from the college. The professors published their research articles using different variations of our college name. They used IIT BHU, Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi, and other names like these. MHRD recorded those who published under the name Indian Institute of Technology(BHU) Varanasi. This resulted in miscalculation and many research articles were not recorded by MHRD.

Due to this, there was a decline in the ranking of IIT BHU. This incident shows that the ranking may not show the real scenario of a college. So, while choosing a college one should not judge a college only by its ranking. They should talk to the present students, faculties or any alumni of the college. They will provide the correct details of the college.
