- IIT Dhanbad is an old institute with a huge alumni base. The alumni of the institute work in the top MNCs across the globe as well as top government sectors in India. While IIT Bhubaneswar was established recently. Naturally, the alumni base of the institute isn’t as well developed.
- IIT Bhubaneswar has a better placement rate. But considering the number of students at both institutes, IIT Dhanbad's placement numbers are pretty good.

A conclusive comparison can only be made between two IITs when the branch is specified. IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Dhanbad both have their own perks.
Both IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Dhanbad are among the 2nd generation IITs. Although IIT ISM Dhanbad is an old institute and converted into an IIT recently. The Mining batches of IIT Dhanbad are best in India and this institute also offers a large alumni base which in turn helps in placements. But as IIT Bhubaneswar was constructed recently it offers better infrastructure.
According to 2020 NIRF Rankings, IIT Dhanbad and IIT Bhubaneswar are ranked at 12 and 22 respectively. However, according to the QS World University Rankings (Among BRICS 2019), IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked 107 while IIT Dhanbad is ranked 173. So, the ranking should not be the only parameter to decide which institute is better.
IIT Bhubaneswar is located in the capital of Odisha and has good connectivity. The campus of IIT Bhubaneswar is an hour away from the nearest airport, while the nearest airport of IIT Dhanbad, Dhanbad Airport has been closed since 1987. This affects the placement of an institute especially in the case of recruitment from bigger MNCs.
The placement statistics of IIT Dhanbad in 2019 shows UG courses had a 76% placement rate and the M.Tech placement rate was 69%. The average salary offered was around 15.5 LPA. Whereas IIT Bhubaneswar had an overall placement percentage of 90% with an average package of 11.4 LPA.
