The Civil Engineering program offered by IIT Bhubaneswar is good in terms of facilities and placement opportunities. The School of Infrastructure (Civil) of IIT Bhubaneswar is among the oldest departments. It offers great infrastructural facilities. The professors are well-experienced and have good technical expertise.
For the past few years, the placements for Civil branch have been good. Many students were offered core job profiles in PSUs like HPCL, IOCL, as well as companies like L&T. The average CTC offered to the students is 11 LPA.
Department of civil engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar started in 2008. Students of civil engineering are trained in various domains such as structural analysis, construction materials, CAD, planning & management. In the last three years, continuous growth in placements of civil engineering has been observed, from 52% in 2017 to 62% in 2018 and 89% in the year 2019. The department has shown tremendous growth in placements. In the year 2017 total 41 companies visited campus during placement season, while in 2018 the number increased to 55. The average package was increased from 10 LPA to 11.15 LPA in the respective years. But in the year 2019, 120 students from UG received offers from 89 companies and the average package was around 11.44 LPA.
Apart from placements, the department facilitates the implementation of sponsored research and consultancy projects. Which address issues related to industries, society, state, and central government. Department also engages in mission projects through the participation of students and faculty. Such as the use of industrial wastes for the development of affordable construction materials and Prime Minister’s Gramina Sadak Yojna. It is also working in Unnat Bharat Abhiyan that predicts low-cost technology-driven rural development, national mission on housing for all by 2022, and smart city project. Some are also involved in projects related to improving groundwater level and quality through efficient water management and renewable energy. The department encourages students for entrepreneurship and to participate in extra-curricular activities and competitions.
Civil Engineering has a decent amount of workload. Its specializations include structural mechanics, structural analysis, structural dynamics, concrete technology, soil-structure interaction, earthquake engineering and seismic design of structures.
Students specializing in Fluid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, and Finite Element Analysis have more workload than other Civil Engineering Specializations. Engineering Project Managers and Senior Civil Engineers receive the highest salary of 14 lakhs per annum.
Civil Engineering Specializations with the least amount of workload are CAD Technicians, Consulting Civil Engineers, Design Engineer, Site Engineer, Estimator, etc. their salary ranging from 5-8 lakhs per annum.
Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are considered the hardest. Civil engineering, industrial engineering, software engineering are all much easier.
