All the mentioned institutions offer good academic opportunities for students. But in my opinion, Electrical from IIT Bhubaneswar is a better choice than IIT Guwahati Civil, IIT Patna Electrical and Electronics and IIT Kanpur Material Science.
I always recommend that you try to join the old IIT. The thing I appreciate the most about IIT is that anytime an opportunity arises, it is available to all branches. Thus, even if you study material science at IITK, you can apply for internships and jobs in the IT, data analysis, and finance sectors, among others.
One of my friends at IIT Madras had visited IIT Mandi for some work and commented on their poor placement scenario saying that the number of internship tests he gave in a single day at IIT Madras was more than the total number of companies visiting IIT Mandi for placements. He did not mean to demean the institute in any way, just wanted to show the stark difference in placements between old and new IITs.
There is an added advantage of joining old IITs. Even if you take less preferred branches such as Material Science here, you will be able to avail opportunities offered to other branches as well. If you have an interest in coding you can apply for related internships and get a job in the IT sector, data analysis, finance sector, etc.
The opportunities and exposure offered by the old IITs can never be compared to that of even the best branches of new IITs. It’s better to talk to seniors of the concerned branch before enrolling.
